u18 TEAM 92 U 17 team 78 51-47 U18 at the half

Top scorers U 18 Daley 29 , States 20 , Esson 11 , Wilkens 11

Top scorers U 17 Ethelson ( not sure how much but it was a lot) Murray scored well too , Whole team shot very well in first half but cooled off in second. Game had some great pace to it. U 17's have a lot of speed and are tough inside....guard play struggled at times vs physical defensive play by U18's

It's early but this U17 team is as good as any Nb has fielded...but they have some work to do....

I geard there might be some top notch basketball in Woodstock this coming weekend ? Some games between the NB U 17's and a club team from Fort Kent in Maine , and that U18 team might be there as well.
Anybody else hear anything ?

ok I'll bite Very Happy

N.B. U 18 Boys ( in this case NB stands for Nasty Boys !! )

A team made up of players from the class of 2011 who are playing at the CIS or CCAA level next year (or who hope to )
The focus of the program is to a) provide an opportunity to play in the summer months , as there are no provincial teams for this age level . They are registered to play in the Red Rock Classic in Charlottetown , The Bluenose Tournament in Halifax , and The Summerfest tournament in Saint John . They will play in the open divisions of these events.
b) To give these players information and experineces that will help them better prepare for play at the next level. In preparation for the summer the Coaching staff of this team polled some ACAA and AUS coaches asking 1) what things should incoming freshmen focus on to prepare for play at the collage level and 2) What things did the coaches find most lacking in the freshmen players that come into their respective programs. While not many of the coaches polled bothered to respond , some did and the answers they gave were very insightful . This information formed the basis for the practice session the team held last week and will be the basis for the in game tactics and coaching emphasis for the summer.
Players were selected by invitation only , no try-outs were held. These are simply kids who expressed and interest in playing and committed to the program once the schedule and cost information was given to them.

The roster cureently includes
Brad States - BHS - Going to Acadia in the fall
Greg Doucet - BHS - Going to Memorial University
Matt Daley - BHS - Going to UNB
Peter Esson - FHS - Going to UNB
Dan Zebarth - FHS - Going to StFX
Richie Wilkens -LHHS - Going to STU
Josh LaFleur -LHHS - Going to STU
Brad Hovey - OHS - Going to STU
Adam Spurrell - KVHS - Going to Bishops
Pat MCNaughton - SSHS- only Gr 11 on the squad but wanted to play summer ball...

Coaches : Paul Daley , Rob Daley , Andrew MacLean

There's the info

I like this game:

If I had to guess what college coaches thought freshmen struggled with (just in terms of basketball):

- Phsycial play: Competing physically, playing through contact, ability to create, maintain and hold space.

- Playing at speed: Executing their skills at pace, being able to shoot - dribble - pass at pace under = or more athletic pressure.

- Shooting: Release point, footwork, quick release, consistency at speed and under pressure.

- Reading individual defense rather then running plays: able to read a screen, being able read and beat their own defender on a cut. too busy trying to run plays rather then just play.

- Individual defense: being able to contain/shut down their individual matchup without needing help, staying out of breakdowns, holding their check off the boards.

- Understanding their role: becoming backup/role player, doing things secondary to scoring the ball to help the team, fitting into a group rather then the group fitting around them.

two things

1) the schedule for this weekends tourament at WHS . For any b-ball fans in the neighbourhood this Saturday.

10:00am NB U18 vs NB U17

1:00 pm NB U18 vs Maine U17

4:00pm NB U17 vs Maine U17

2) Coach DJR , you just about nailed it.... here are the responses I got from the college coaches ihad polled.

Question #1 What , in your opinion , would be the top 3 things an incoming freshman , should focus on to prepare to be a valued player at the college or university level ?

Realistic expectations: This is not high school. The intensity, physicality,Mental toughness required is usually 2 steps higher than high school.

Conditioning and the ability to recover daily is one of the keys. You must prepare for the grind. Physical conditioning is a major component. Daily maintenance is essential. Once beaten down physically, confidence in their ability is the next to go as they hit the so-called "rookie-wall".

reality of finding out "I'm no longer the man!" can be a big blow
for some of them mentally. Being grounded about their situation and seeing the big picture is crucial. "Where do I fit in this line-up?" Going from leading man to bit player is a tough adjustment for anyone.

Question #2 At the college level what skills (on or off the court) are often the most lacking in freshman players?

The ability to understand: team defense, individual defense, defending the two man game. How to run the two man game. What is a quality possession or Shot?
In high school every shot is a good shot because in most cases they are the team's best opportunity to score.
Defense is not emphasized for the best players because they can't afford fouls or the coach knows they can't win without him on the floor.
Learning how to practice with a high level of Intensity for two hours. Learning what hard work is????? Nothing in life is free! They will not be able to dominate the ball as they did in high school so learning to live with out the ball will be key as well, Moving without
the ball is also a big one.

let me know what yas think....
