St. Petes are playing at St. Pats on Thursday and Earl will be at Louis Riel on Thursday as well. The two winners go to the finals and earn ofsaa births. The two losers get a play in opportunity for the last ofsaa birth. Should be some solid matchups. Predictions???

If St. Pete's lost in the semi-finals and both finalists decided to play AAAA, since it's in Ottawa, would that mean the other semi-final loser automatically goes to AAA in Windsor? Would there be any behind the scenes lobbying to convince one of the two finalists to go to Windsor?

I remember when Pearson beat Borden for the Carleton Board(s) championship in 1989, the Pearson coach asked the convener if he could play in the NCSSAA AAA final instead of the AA one (there was no AAAA back then). The convener told him he technically could but also (jokingly) told him he would have him kneecapped if he did that. He wanted the Carleton Board to sweep both finals (which they did; though in Pearson's case it's because the Ottawa Board(s) champion declined to participate in the AA championship game).

Should be a great day of basketball. Very excited to see potential recruits and some entertaining games.

Xavier, you bring up an interesting point that I am not sure there is a clear answer to. Now that we know that St. Pats beat St. Petes today, that means there will be two schools that can play either AAA or AAAA ofsaa. If both decide to stay in Ottawa, then I guess the loser of the Earl-Louis Riel game would go to AAA. I am not sure that the association can force a team to spend the money to travel across the province when they earned the right to choose and stay to play here for much less money. However, it may be appealing for the winner of the city finals to go to triple as they would have a better chance at medalling at ofsaa.

Earl of March 50 @ Louis Riel 52
St. Peter 61 @ St. Patrick 72

Louis Riel vs. St. Patrick for the AAAA/AAA championship next Tuesday at Carleton.

Interesting to see if both will choose to play AAAA in Ottawa. Playing at home is cheaper, provides more exposure and allows their fans to attend. OTOH, it will mean a lower seed and a more difficult road to a medal than playing AAA in Windsor.

Edit: CoachC, it looks like we both had the same thoughts at the same time.

The finals are on Tuesday and with a PD day tomorrow and Family day Monday, it will be interesting to see how the two teams prepare. If one of the two teams in the final opts for AAA, then I imagine Earl and St. Petes will play for the second AAAA bid. St. Pats has done a considerable amount of travelling this year to play against the top teams in the province. I would anticipate that they would like to play here but who knows? Usually, they make the teams declare before the game that decides the ofsaa teams, so this could already be decided. How about this possibility...if both say they want to stay and play AAAA should St. Petes then have the right to play against Louis Riel for the spot since technically, the AAAA team lost one of the AAAA spots to a AAA but did not play the other AAA team???

This is one of those years where the NCSSAA rules don't directly address the situation so it will be interesting to find out what happens. Getting to OFSAA by default would probably leave many people with a bad taste in their mouths.

I know that Toronto Public (TDSSAA) plays a back door game for the second berth they receive every year in AAAA and AAA since the semi-final pairings are determined by region, not ranking. As a result, the championship game loser has to play the semi-finalist who played the championship-winning team.

Louis-Riel & St-Pats have until 3pm tomorow to decide if they will either opt for AAA or AAAA OFSAA.
If they both decide to go to Quad A then the 3rd ofsaa birth automaticly goes to Earl of march since St-Petes are a AAAA school. Technically St-Petes faith know lays in the hand of the 2 teams that will meet in the finals next tuesday.

they only play if one of LR or St. Pats chooses to go AAA. If they both go AAAA then Earl goes AAA automatically because St. Peters is a AAAA school and you cannot go down a category.

This is exactly what has happened. LR and St Pats are staying for AAAA, Earl is going to AAA. Confirmed by the league this morning.

so why is it that the NCSSAA stop running a AAAA finals and a AAA finals? thats what they do for A and AA even though they play the same teams in the regular season. This is unfair for AAAA schools because the olds for them qualifying ofsaa is less then a AAA school.

They have to do it for A/AA because the AA cannot qualify for the A birth for ofsaa. The majority of the teams (all but three) are AA thus they have to separate the championship. In the AAA/AAAA divisions, there are only a handful of AAAA teams and the rest are AAA. Since all of the teams are eligible to qualify for AAAA it makes sense to have them all compete for that championship. It also makes sense to send the best team in your association to the toughest competition (AAAA) especially when your association is hosting the ofsaa championship. The teams that make the finals would arguably be the best teams.

Still, it seems that St. Peters is getting a bit of a raw deal here. Not that anything could change for this year, but it may have been more appropriate to have the loser of the final play the team that lost to the champs in the semis for the right to choose what ofsaa to go to. Thus if LR loses, they would have to play St. Petes and if St. Pats loses, they would have to play Earl. In this situation, St. Petes would have a chance to play a team for the right to go to that third ofsaa spot or Earl would have a chance to play for the 2nd bid (likely a better seed at ofsaa).

What if they went back to the system of declaring what level you want to qualify for at the beginning of the season. Or Seed/declare half-way through the season.

There is really no perfect system that is going to keep everyone happy, and we will continue to have situations like this no matter how they decide to do it.

From St. Pat's Paul Joseph, who graduated in 1996 (I think) played Division 2 at Slippery Rock; Shayok Shayok left after grade 11 plays Division 1 for Bradley this year.

From Louis Riel, Manny Messy played at Seton Hall (later went on to play professionally with Osvaldo Jeanty in Germany)

From St Matthew:

Sheldon Stewart received scholarship to Lehigh University in the US, returned and played for the Carleton Ravens.
Moriah Trowell played on the Canadian junior national team, and received a scholarship to St. John's University in New York. She later returned, and played at Ottawa U.

2002 SRB Grad: Rob McLean was heavily recruited by div 2 schools, but elected to stay at home to play ball at Carleton with the amazing recruiting class that took them to a National Championship. Only played one year, then disappeared...
I don't think it's unusual for Ottawa players to get looks.

These are the ones I can think of for D1:
Chris Jonsson (Bell '82) - Niagara
Vigor Kapetanovic (Lisgar '94) - Penn
Oggie Kapetanovic (Ashbury '96) - Brown
Scott Gaffield (Glebe '00) - Yale
Sheldon Stewart (St. Matt's '03) - Lehigh (played in one exhibition game before transferring to Carleton)

Left for prep or Cegep schools before D1:
Mani Messy (left after grade 12 at Louis Riel in '00) - Seton Hall
Kambi Laleye (left after OAC at Gloucester in '03) - Buffalo
Jahenns Manigat (left after grade 11 at Immaculata in '08) - Creighton
Shayok Shayok (left after grade 11 at St. Pat's in '09) - Bradley

Went through US junior college before D1:
Osman Olol (Notre Dame '07) - Coppin State
Eric Kibi (left as a grade 11 at St. Matt's) - Arkansas-Little Rock
