PostSubject: National Capital Classic Feb 4-6   Thu Jan 28, 2010 5:34 pm

Here is a list of the confirmed teams for the National Capital Classic Feb 4-6 and their tentative first round games. The list is not complete as a few teams apparently just dropped out so I believe the convenor is looking to find three more teams. This is why there is TBA for three of the spots below. Still, looks like a decent field of teams.

At Ridgemont
Earl of March vs. Philip Pocock (Toronto I believe) 5:00 pm
TBA vs TBA 6:30
Regiopolis (Kingston) vs. Western Tech (Toronto) 8:00
Sacred Heart vs. Grande Riviere (not sure) 1:30 Friday

At Hillcrest
Hillcrest vs. St. Joeseph (Cornwall) 5:00 pm
St. Matts vs. Notre Dame 6:30
Colonel By vs. Perth 8:00
Thomas A Stewart vs Gisele Lalonde 1:30 Friday

At Glebe
Glebe vs. Gloucester 5:00 pm
Brookfield vs. St. Joes (Ottawa) 6:30
Ashbury vs. Parkside (Hamilton) 8:00
IE Weldon (Lindsay) vs. Sir Wilfrid Laurier 1:30 Friday

At SRB
SRB vs.St. Benedicts 5:30 pm
St, Pats vs. Smith Falls 7:00
Holy Cross (Kingston I believe) vs. Ottawa Islamic School 8:30
PCVI (Peterborough) vs. Deslauriers 1:30 pm Friday

We know the local teams somewhat but here is what I know about some of the out of town teams.

Parkside - they are one of the top teams from Hamilton and were number one in that region until they recently lost. They won the Queens tournament and I believe one of the local Hamilton tournaments as well. They are one of the favourites to do well if they can get to AA ofsaa.

PCVI has a history of being one of the best teams out of Peterborough but I am unsure how they are this year.

Holy Cross is a contender from Kingston to get one of the births to AAA ofsaa in Kingston. They lost to SRB in the finals of their own tournament.

Smith Falls made it to the quarter finals in the 52 team St. Joes Classic in Ottawa and is likely the main competition for Perth to represent at AA ofsaa.

Perth is likely the top team in the Ottawa valley right now. They can shoot and have some size to mix in as well. It will be interesting to see if there best player is healthy yet as he has been hurt all season.

IE Weldon typically a solid team from Lindsay. Not too sure about them this year though I believe they won the consolation championship of the Holy Cross tournament in Kingston

Thomas A Stewart is another one of the programs from Peterborough that always seems to be in the mix. Have not heard much yet this year but we will see.

Philip Pocock is a tier two team from Toronto I believe but I could definitely be wrong on this one.

Western Tech plays in probably the most difficult high school league in the country and contends each year with power houses like Eastern Commerce, Northern, Jarvis and so on. They should be one of the favourites from out of town to contend for the tournament title.

Regiopolis ND is a solid team from Kingston as well and looking to earn that second bid to AAA ofsaa in Kingston. They work hard and can give teams fits. They are well disciplined team that could knock some of the top teams out of the tournament.

St. Joes Cornwall is always, it seems, the best team from Cornwall. They beat St. Pats by double digits at the Jaguar Classic and have one of the premier big men in the tournament.

St. Benedict and Grande Riviere I have no idea on so please feel free to enlighten us.

Grande-Riviere is a high school (Grades 9-11) across the river in Aylmer, Quebec featuring star point guard Olivier Hanlan, who is a legitimate Division 1 prospect.

St. Benedict's is currently in last place in the Sudbury (Div. 1) league with a 1-8 record.

Philip Pocock is 6-1 in Region of Peel's Tier II league.

TASS made AAA OFSAA last year and have many returning players, including a bunch of 5th-years, from that team.

I would say Parkside, Perth, and Western Tech are the top 3 out-of-town teams.

I have adjusted my first post as there were some changes to the matchups and I added the game times and locations. Please note that the games start at 5:00 at Hillcrest, Glebe, and Ridgemont but not until 5:30 at SRB as there is a senior girls volleyball game first. Also, there is one first round game for each gym that starts on Friday at 1:30 but there will a 2nd round game at 12:00 at each gym first. Looks to be some great basketball with many of the top teams from the city and solid out of town teams.

I do not believe that this was a good tournament draw for the organizer. The SRB vrs. Parkside game was actually a 4 point game with one minute left, before SRB missed some key shots and Parkside hit some free throws. Still, in my opinion, SRB and Parkside were the two best teams in this tournament, and for them to meet up in the quarterfinal is a bad decision by the organizer. Also, note that guard Farhan Awaleh wasn't playing in this game for SRB due to an ankle sprain.

Who cares who the best 2 teams were - Parkside was the BEST team in the tournament and at least they played SRB along the way! The tournament isn't perfect and maybe seedings (if they do them) need to be looked at more closely but the OFSAA style (winner/loser) allows for some seeding issues. The other thing is the schedule favours teams playing Thursday night - looks like SH was only team to play 6 games in 2 days (the other 3 final four played a Thursday night game so more spread out) so maybe more rested?? And injuries, please everyone has them at some point in the season - forget excuses - SRB is still the best team in the city, don't worry hope you're ok now? We'll find out who's the best in the next couple weeks, some very exciting hoops to come. Lots of question about Amir is he still playing and eligible??

Parkside definitely earned the tournament victory by beating Ashbury twice, Sacred Heart and SRB. The game against SRB (I did not see the other Parkside game) was close after the first half with SRB getting it within one possession game. SRB shot well under 50% from the free throw line. That combined with a very poor first quarter was the difference in the game. All credit to Parkside however as they had to beat some of the best that Ottawa could put in front of them and they did.

As for Amir's eligibility. If Amir was not eligible, he would not be playing.
