There is the possibility of midget basketball club teams being started in a number of Basketball New Brunswick associations in time for this year.
Traditionally, the midget level players for those in Grade 9 and 10 play at the interscholastic level, but it was felt there is a void for players who do not play at that level and don't have a lot of options if they don't make high school rosters. There is interest within Sackville, Moncton, Fredericton YCBC and Fredericton Northside Minor Basketball Association to play a shortened girls' season from January through March to at least establish a program. There is also interest in the Kennebecasis Valley and Woodstock. Some associations have already had tryouts or have existing midget teams, but the opportunity to be a bridge from mini to bantam and the next level is a possibility if those involved can ensure they have enough players to fill rosters.

This is intriguing. With all the problems with finding teams and competitive imbalances in JV this may be the first move away from school basketball to "club". I'm interested to see how it works in Jan-Feb for areas that want to do it in conjunction with school teams rather then in lieu of. LIke the idea of a place for these kids to play and be in more competitive format then JV leagues currently are in a lot of cases. Worried about the issue of this backdooring school policies/teams and replacing school based athletics in the long term. I'm a huge supporter of club basketball in NB, but feel that school sports is of paramount importance to kids and communities too and think they are being forced into conflict.

Keep us apprised. This could be good!

I think this is a great idea. With the number of girls coming through the high school programs in the KV there will be some very good basketball players that may not have a team to play on. if they can keep up their skills in with a midget team those entering grade 12 the following year will have a shot at their high shcool team.

Through some trial and tribulation, there is indeed the start of a BNB regular season midget girls' club program unfolding. The Northside Minor Basketball Association Lions of Fredericton played the Sackville Titans last weekend in the first two games of the year. Both NMBA and Sackville will be in Moncton in mid-February for games and news has come down the pike that Miramichi is hosting practices this week and next to get involved in the mix. It's all about starting somewhere. This past Sunday, some 20 girls who weren't playing basketball this year played in games so that's the good news.
