Tamanawis basketball team arrested after gun is seen

Update: Toy gun takedown
by Kelly Hayes & Wayne Moore - Story: 70498
Feb 2, 2012 / 2:29 pm

It was all a big misunderstanding.

Several members of a basketball team from Surrey were briefly handcuffed, searched and questioned Thursday afternoon after witnesses reported seeing someone with a gun.

Police, at the Capri Mall on another matter, apparently saw someone put a gun in the waistband of their pants. RCMP then followed the group from the Capri to a Subway Restaurant at the corner of Gordon Drive and Lawrence Avenue shortly before 2 p.m. and called for backup.

They surrounded the building and waited for patrons and staff to leave before cuffing the individuals involved.

It turns out the individuals had purchased cap guns at the Dollar Store in the Capri Mall.

They admitted to shooting the guns in the air.

The RCMP helicopter, service dogs and at least a dozen cruisers were involved in the incident.

Gordon Drive between Bernard and Leon was blocked off during the incident.

Police confiscated the cap guns.

The teens are members of the Tamanawis Wildcats, in Kelowna for the Western Canada Boys Basketball Tournament at KSS (Kelowna Secondary)

PostSubject: Mitch Goodwin - Western Canada    Fri Feb 03, 2012 3:32 pm

I have seen most of the top 10 schools play this year. After watching Goodwin play last night there is no doubt in my mind he is the most dynamic player in BC.
If he stays healthy, it will be VERY difficult to beat Kelowna this year.
What I was most impressed about about is his improved outside shooting. He always had the ability to drive and finish but now he has a well rounded game.

Thoughts?

PostSubject: Ryan Watters ups the ante...   Fri Feb 03, 2012 5:54 pm

... by providing video webcasting of the Kelowna - Pitt Meadows game this evening.

http://www.ryanwatters.ca/special-broadcast-presentation-alert/

Should be an interesting game. Pitt is in tough at Kelowna'a barn but the experience tonight, regardless of the outcome will certainly aid Pitt as the Valleys and Provincials roll around.

Not ruling my Pitt boys out but even if they are able to keep Goodwin to a "normal" game, they will need to improve greatly on their abysmal shooting effort (31%) from last night to have any chance.

Way to go Ryan and thank you very much!

Not sure of the WRCA vs Harry Ainlay score, but Kelowna 66-61 Pitt Meadows.

PostSubject: Kelowna beats Pitt 66-61   Sat Feb 04, 2012 1:49 am

As I said...30% shooting does not win games, especially when your opponent shoots 60%. Not too sure why Pitt is in a funk with shooting but they better sort out it before the Valleys/Provincials.

Though they could not hit an outside shot tonight this was not a bad game for Pitt as they did what they had to do to make a game of this in the second half and playing on a tough floor, I think the score about sums up the game.

Kelowna took full advantage of a Pitt team that could not hit even hit their layups through out the first half to give them enough cushion that by the fourth quarter when Pitt found it's game, it was just too late.

Though the Owls hit for 60% tonight I think Kelowna has better games in their tank as well. At the end of the day, looking at the big picture, I cannot see any reason (Vancouver College and Walnut Grove and maybe those pesky Terry Fox Ravens withstanding) why these teams will not meet again on a little bit bigger of a stage.

Nice job by WRCA to push Ainley to the edge and with any luck they would be playing in the big show tomorrow night.

Really enjoyed the broadcast Ryan (you homer you) and if you ever make it down to Pitt Meadows let me know and I'll make sure to make the time to take you for lunch!

I have to agree. Goulet is set in his ways. More likely that he just denied Goodwin the ball and gave lots of help when he caught it.

I think Goodwin just ran out of gas in the 4th. Pitt had a better awareness of Goodwin in ths second half and double teamed him quite a bit. It looked like he tweaked something when he dove into the crowd in the 3 rd quarter and then again towards the end of th game as he finished the game on the bench.

The Goodwin/ Blackaby battle was great as they defended each other; Goodwin won the first 3/4, but Blackaby found the open lanes in the 4th to get some easy lay ups.
Maybe Blackaby's defense wore Goodwin down, as I think Matt is the best defender in BC hands down.

Trevor had another great game offensively. It was only the third game I have seen him play this year, but he is a great offensive rebounder. He has innate sense of where the ball is going and gets there. He rebounded very well in the game against Balfour as well as showed his shooters touch from 3. This game would have been a great final.
