Thanks Sportvictoria, all your hard working into getting us info on high school basketball on the island and elsewhere does not go unappreciated.

I always wanted to know how rankings are compiled. What criteria is considered in the ranking of teams, do you compile stats on all games? Just curious as to the thought process and how much work you must put in to look over numbers for so many high school games that go on during the season.

Weekly rankings are very much a situation of "what have you done lately". Results in the last ranking period stand for more than results from earlier in the season. Example being that Team A beats Team B in December, Team A gets the higher ranking... then in January Team B beats Team C and Team C beats Team A - Team B moves ahead of both Team A and C. What this means is that in the specific ranking period in question, Team B is higher. Does not mean that over the course of the season that Team A is not better than Team B.

All games that a team is involved in can affect their ranking.

Common games are used when there is not direct competition - this can be very challenging as common games often do not come in the same time period.

Teams with sick, hurt or missing players will not get consideration for this.

Same as 'well they will be good at the end of the year' thinking - this will get no consideration.

Quality of a win or loss has some bearing - this is very subjective so it is used as a deciding factor as little as possible.

Wins or higher level teams carry weight too - just as losses to higher level teams can hurt. This is also subjective, however it's still a good guideline given how many cross-over games there are. A loss to lower level teams, "AA" losing to "A", can be devastating to a ranking.

Lack of quality "AA" games to a "AA" team also can hurt them as they are not playing the same teams that they are being ranked against.

Teams not turning in results to the BC Boys' Basketball site are also big problems. Last year some teams did not turn in losses until weeks later (in the hope that they would be overlooked). This results in sudden drops to teams week's after. Games should be posted to the BC Boys' Basketball site the SAME DAY if not within 24 hours of the completion of the game. No reason that a game cannot be posted within 24 hours of a game.

As far as the input goes, we look for several key people (that give a good unbiased point of view) in various areas of BC to put in suggestions on rankings. Then we compile the info and put it out to four people in key areas for final discussion and rankings. From there we usually have a pretty good consensus on the rankings. We try to avoid what we call 'judgement calls' on rankings - but unfortunately, sometimes we cannot get around them.

Thanks for the informative info Sportvictoria, Good to know.

Now as stated in this forum previously, I just wish all BC high School teams would be more vigilant in getting there game stats into BC Boys Basketball so we could have a real comprehensive listing of pertinent stats and scores for all games in BC.

I mean with the internet in basically every home and mobile device I don't know why teams/coaches can't have the stats sent off to the BC Boys Basketball website within 24 hrs as you've stated. It really boggles the mind why this is such a slow-go, but I guess any info we can get is appreciated. But all of us Stat-Junkies would love for there to be more info available on all these games, hopefully this will chappen in the near future.

Keep in mind - I'm talking about GAME SCORES only.

Most teams still keep individual stats on paper - this takes a lot more time to input online. I did it for years with a hand-held and then uploaded to the site and that was quite time consuming. Transfering from paper to the web is even longer - it also requires the totals be done and accurate - both are more problematic than you could imagine.

How does Southridge move up 3 spots in the same week they lose to a "AA top 5" team Brentwood College by 35 pts. ( Brentwood is also questionable as Brentwood hardly beat gulf island??? 42-40???)

King George also took a tough loss to Kits, causing them to drop a bit and opening a up space.

Brentwood played Gulf Islands after the rankings came out - but they still did win while missing 2 starters and a third barely played (hurt from the tourney)

At the Brentwood Tournament:
http://www.sportvictoria.com/basketball/2011-12/tourneys/2011-12%20-%20Brentwood.htm
Southridge beat St. Michaels and lost to Mount Douglas by 7 - giving MD their best game of the tournament
Brentwood beat GW Graham in the semis by 2
GW Graham's only loss was to Brentwood by 2

There is a lot of parity in AA. Makes the weekly rankings pretty tough for the committee to work through.

Hope this info answers your questions.

I agree with the parity in both AA and AAA from what i'm seeing in the scores updates.

And thanks for the reply but still don't fully understand some of the rankings here in BC, i'm from Ontario and we did it different (but its all good, big fan nonetheless).

Isn't Kits AAA?? a tier above King George?? Does that count?

And for Southridge, I agree they played some big games, but then to lose by 35+ that should have put them up 1 max 2 spots???

And hope Brentwood starters get better, but guess that shows they lack depth??

That's pretty much what the Brentwood coach said to me when I gave him a hard time about not being able to find the hoop.

All games count - if King George beats Kits... shoud it count? This year quite a few top "AA" teams are knocking off top "AAA" teams. So when you have a bad loss to a team that other "AA" teams around in the ranking are beating or taking down to the wire... then you are going to take a hit for it.

Makes sense, thanks... hopefully Brentwood is healthy for the AA's so this problem doesn't arise again.
