PostSubject: City Playoff Seedings/Favorites   Fri Feb 10, 2012 5:03 pm

It's unfortunate that it's so difficult to get much information in the way of scores, standings etc for the different municipal leagues. Other than a thread on Richmond and several posts about St. Georges and Van College in addition to some tourney updates, there's not much out there!

As the playoffs are upon us I thought I'd start a Jr. Varsity thread where perhaps everyone could post what they know for each city's playoffs, who the top seeds are, who's favoured etc.

Vancouver Public - not sure what to make here; one of the few leagues that has an up to date website with scores and standings. Tupper looks like they've been dominating, and I know Kits is strong, but in 2nd place to Churchill, who are 7-0? I saw Churchill play in the Drive tourney and they got blown out a couple of times, so unless they were missing half their team I I'm not sure what to make of it.

Surrey - I know the top and favoured teams are Tamanawis, Panorama Ridge, Fleetwood Park and Lord Tweedsmuir. There's a few other competitive teams as well such as Holy Cross, Semihamoo, Pacific Academy and North Surrey who have the potential to pull upsets, but generally one of the first 4 teams should come out on top, with Tammy the slight favorite.

Burnaby - have seen BBY South play a couple of times and assume they're the top seed, but are any other teams in Burnaby a threat to upset in the playoffs?

Richmond - Looks like it's Palmer and McNeil all the way? Haven't seem them play but they both have impressive wins and I've seen McMath and wasn't too impressed.

Coquitlam/Poco - I've heard quite a bit about Fox and Gleneagles, but heard that neither are to top seeds? Can anyone post who else is strong? I've seen Moody play and they seemed ok, but someone told me that Heritage Woods and Best were both strong? I have no idea so thought someone on here might.

Delta - have only seem Delview play, who have a couple of very good players but they seem to have lost to some of the stronger, 'ranked' teams. Any other strong teams in Delta?

Langley - outside of Walnut Grove, have heard nothing of other teams that are strong here. As 4 teams from Langley make the Fraser Valleys, I hope there's some decent squads out there like Brookswood, etc.

Maple Ridge - Is this another year where Pitt reigns supreme, or are there some stronger programs to challenge PM this year?

Abby/Chilliwack - I know Mouat always has a competitive team, and that MEI, Yale and Sardis are quite strong, but have no idea who's in First place out that way, who's favoured, etc. Can anyone shed any light?

Just thought I'd put this out there to see if we can collectively 'fill in the blanks' and see who might be the contenders to come out of their respective cities!

Thanks

Gleneagle and Fox are 1/2. Then you have Centennial as the 3rd seed. Heritage Woods, Port Moody and Riverside went 1-1 against each other. Best is.. ok. I do know that Riverside was close against Centennial and should have beaten Heritage Woods.

Could Riverside go on a big run like last year in grade 9 ?

In Langley there is a BIG drop from Walnut Grove to the next best team which is Brookswood.

Langley play off:

Wednesday:

Game 1 : Walnut grove vs winner ( Langley sec vs L. fundamental)

Game 2 : Credo vs winner ( Aldergrovs vs Brookswood)

Thursday:

Game 3: Loser 1 vs Loser 2

Finals : Winner 1 vs Winner 2

Walnut grove and Credo already qualified for the valleys.

Thursday games will be at the middle court of LEC with all the paraphernalia like Jumbotorn etc. That includes player intro on it with music, instant replays, coaches interviews at half-time and sale of game CD at the end. This is treated by the LEC crew as a full rehearsal for the AAA final.

North Shore = Sutherland and Elphinstone in the finals, West Van vs STA for 3rd. Top 3 advances to the District Championship. I believe Sutherland beat Elphinstone in league play, Elphinstone features 2 BBC u15 members in guard TJ Turrene and forward Nate Haglund. Judging from the scores, not much separation from all 4 teams

Burnaby/New West = South and New West should come top 2 with the remaining teams battling for the 3rd spot. South features 3 BBC u15 members in guards JC Pineda, Martin Bogajev and forward Djordge Obradovic.

Richmond = Palmer, MacNeill, McMath and Richmond High should battle for the top 3 seeds to the districts. Palmer has been under the radar led by BBC u15 member Gurjit Pooni. Guard Antonio Jhuty can also score in bunches. Not much separation between the 4 teams

Vancouver = Churchill should have an easy route to the city finals, with Kits and Tupper having to play each other in the semifinals. Tupper has been under the radar having beaten MacNeill, Sutherland and a few others while also coming close against Claremont. Big drop off after these 3 teams

For Surrey, there could be some upsets as there are some pretty competitive teams in the middle of the pack. I haven't seen the seedings anywhere, but believe it looks like this;

1. Tammy, Panorama, Fleetwood and Pacific Academy are the top 4 seeds;
2. Tweedsmuir, Holy Cross, Semihamoo, Queen Elizabeth, Sullivan, North Surrey, Johnston Heights and I believe Elgin Park have a play in on Monday, where the 4 winning teams will be in the quarters on Wednesday.

Ultimately, I think the top 4 teams are Fleetwood Park, Tammy, Panorama Ridge, and Lord Tweedsmuir.

Fleetwood has size inside and good outside shooting, Tammy isn't very big but are very dangerous from 3 point range, Panorama plays very aggressive defense and gets a lot of their points off turnovers, and Lord Tweedsmuir is very young but could very well have the most talent. I believe they have 7 grade 9's on the team, including 3 starters and the 6th man. It depends on matchups, but I could see any of the 4 coming out on top in Surrey. Pacific Academy is the wild card, as they finished first in their division but I saw them play a few times (RCMP Tourney, Drive Tourney) and are very inconsistent but have a couple of strong players.

In head to head all have been close games; Tammy lost to LT by 4 and beat them by 3, and has 2 close wins vs. Panorama, Panorama won the Surrey RCMP tourney, defeating Fleetwood, who beat Tammy, so it will be very interesting.

Will update Tuesday after the first round is done.

PostSubject: Lower Island second round   Mon Feb 13, 2012 10:43 pm

Lower Island Playoff Tournament

Semifinals Tuesday

Claremont def. Lambrick Park
Oak Bay 38 SMUS 37 (This was a crazy finish as Oak Bay led most of the game. SMUS clawed back to take leads in the 4th quarter but the lead changed hands 3 times in the final 22 seconds. SMUS had one-point lead and the ball out of bounds with 3.5 seconds left. Oak Bay stole the ball and Matt Grey banked in a winning drive as buzzer sounded)

Other games
Stelly's def. Reynolds
Mt. Douglas def. Belmont

Today's Games
SMUS vs. Mt. Douglas
Lambrick Park vs. Stelly's
(Winners play in third-place game Thursday to determine third Lower Island berth in Island tournament)

Thursday's Final
Claremont vs. Oak Bay
(Both finalists have already advanced to Island tournament)
