I think without Evagelista College will be in tough as they are not deep at all..so i will take St Georges as a mild upset..as for the other 3 Pt Grey,Byrne Creek & Kits

Saints beat VC. Not surprising at all. Without Evangelista, VC has lost a large dimension (and points) of their game. The kid's gotta be their MVP, albeit a quiet one.

Every team has injuries and at this time of year many players who are playing hurt. That is why you have to have depth and you only get depth by going deep into your bench whenever you can. You never know when you will need someone to step up and that is hard to do when the bench rarely plays. Saints has good depth, Kits too. Should be a good final.

I agree with depth and have never bought into a loss being the result of a single someone being out of the lineup. A good team will overcome the loss of a single player because depth is what helps make them a good team. I would say it is rare for a team going into the provincials is going to get it done with five guys and I doubt many will stand at the end with even six. It is depth 7-8 deep that gets you to the end of your regionals, zones and the provincials.

However.

When you lose a player of the calibre of Evangelista you have lost more than just a top player. Erickson has been the heart and soul of VC since at least grade 8. He does not always get the press that Penman or Solomon do but to me he is every bit as importent to the Irish, if not more as he is the unsung guy that just gets it done at both ends of the court every night.

I was talking on Facebook the other night with a VC photographer about what a shame it may be if Erickson could not go for the provincials. As my son plays for Pitt you know I am cheering like mad for the Marauders but I am also cheering like mad for Erickson to be healthy as from every interaction I have had with him, he is a class act and deserves better than to be sitting on the end of the bench in Langley wearing a cast.

I too have always been impressed with Evangelista. Wonderful kid who has worked incredibly hard and is a true team player.
From what I understand, he should be able to play in the BC's if VC makes it.
I also have to say how impressed I am with RonH. You, like Erickson, are a class act and it is obvious you truly care about kids. My respect could not be higher.
Instead of all the vitriol and politics spewed by so many on this site you always take the high road and are on the side of the kids. Imagine where the game would be if we had people like you in leadership positions within the basketball heirarchy.
Thanks for all you do and for how you do it.

Look for Gogi to step up. We all know Gogi is a good player from last year. This is the first game that he’s played significant minutes for VC; a little rusty but overall pretty good.

well said gents. i've seen evangelista play and have heard others talk about the kid. all good stuff, great player, team oriented, and very humble. let's hope he can come back and help his team and end his senior year playing in the provincials - if anyone deserves to go out like that, it's him.

in an earlier post, someone said saints won because they have depth but vc doesn't. isn't this the same vc team that won jv? i recall they had mad depth just a couple of years ago. did everyone transfer to saints??

They are very deep. Coach just doesn't play the bench in the games i've seen. Their bench would probably have been a top 3 team in the Vancouver Secondary Schools league.

oh I see. mmm. gotta question the coaching then. gives rise to whole lot of other issues: team chemistry, preparedness...

In a big game like that with a high ranking for Provincials on the line I don't understand why VC didn't use the bench like Saints did. Especially if the bench are as good as Kits, Churchill, Point Grey and Tupper as you say.

It's interesting how everyone likes to be the critic.
Team dynamics are almost impossible for anyone not directly connected with the team to know.
I seem to remember that two weeks ago VC beat Saints in the biggest game of the year to that date, then two days later beat Kelowna handily.
Seems they were doing okay with their strategy then.
Obviously having a deeper team is the goal of most coaches but we outsiders just don't know why the bench has only been a couple of guys deep most of the season for them. We do know their coaches have a long history of success so I am not about to speculate, but I bet those coaches wish their team was deeper too.

Point Grey, with Andrew Mavety scoring about 40, got by Churchill.
VC dominated Tupper, up 60-30 at one point. Won 73-56. Penman played very well.
Saints beat Kits in one of the great finishes ever.
Saints trailed most of the game with Luka, of Kits, being almost unstoppable. I think he scored 35.
Saints finally hit some shots and were up 3 with 50 seconds to go. Kits hit a two, Saints made one of two at the line and were up two with 22 secs to go.
Kits hit a three with 9.6 seconds to go and were up one.
Saints drove, missed the contested layup and Milan tipped the miss in at the buzzer to win. The refs waved their arms and ran off the floor. No one knew if they were waving that the game was over or if the shot was late. Kits fans celebrated, stormed the floor...then found out Saints had won...59-58. Crazy, wonderful ending. I thought the refs were right and the shot should have counted, as it did.
High school basketball...what entertainment!!
