PostSubject: Why can't VC and Saints succeed at the senior level?   Fri Mar 02, 2012 9:02 pm

THIS IS NOT TO START A FLAME WAR

It's an actual question that's been bugging me for a few years.

VC and Saints usually dominate from grade 8-10. Especially VC. Every year, it seems like VC and Saints have all their grade 8-10 teams in the top 5 of the province, with VC usually winning 1 or 2 provincial championships for grade 8-10 every single year. You can expect that one of their younger teams will have won a championship.

So what exactly is the reason for their futility at the grade 11 and 12 level. VC and Saints are always competitive, but between the 2 of them, they've combined for 1 AAA championship in the last 45 years. You'd think with the absolute dominance they show at the younger levels, they'd definitely have a handful of AAA titles between them.

Can somebody close to the situation offer some insight?

Is it coaching, players transferring out, the 'private school mystique' wearing off, or something else? What exactly happens to these teams in their senior years that causes their dominance to all of a sudden vanish?

senior ball is a whole different ball game from junior. maybe their roleplayers who were successful contributors in the earlier years didn't develop their game or mature physically fast enough

and there's a lot of talent outside VC and saints as well

Both Saints and VC have school teams at the younger grade levels. Huge advantage in the beginning years of high school. They are all well coached at the younger levels. Its not just those two. How many Jr Prov Champs become Sr Champs two years later? Not very many. Different game.

Saints never had a strong program until recently. VC's been a top 10 team for 20 years...lost in 3 finals I think...to Richmond(Pasha), St.George's(buzzer beater) and last year to Palmer. Back in the day(pre-2000) u had to deal with jr.highs feeding sr schools. That could be a reason..ie.they beat the local Richmond schools...but then have kids from Palmer, McRoberts and Burnett go to Richmond High. U could even use ND as an example..Sands, Delview and Burnsview were feeder schools.

One reason Junior champs don't often translate into senior success is that most of the really talented grade 10's play varsity.
I would guess that in any season, of the top ten grade 10 players in the province, almost none are playing junior.
VC also has the situation where many of its young kids are Asian and they usually don't have the growth spurt that many in other groups do. Very talented and hard-working kids who see their opponents become much bigger as they age.
It is, of course a positive that your junior team wins what is not an easy title to win, but it is not much of an indicator of future success at least as a BC champion at the senior level.

This has really only been more common in the last 5 years. WRCA made moving up players more common but that was because of number of students.
