Let’s see if I can get this board charged up again. The season is around the corner and its time to put away topics like the best A team in the north that have red uniforms. Let’s talk about the best ten teams in the province regardless of class or location. With 47 days till the first tip it’s time to sort this out! Here is my first crack at the list >>>let the ranting begin

1)KVHS (toss up with FHS I give the advantage to the experience of coach Vaughan)
2)FHS
3) St. Stephen (If they come out the gate rolling this season unlike last year they are a tough squad)
4) Moncton High
5) Leo Hays (Another good group under Hickey will look to play spoiler all season)
6 Harrison Trimble High School
7) Riverview
8 ) Carlton North (Should be big tough squad a little young but will be hard to play this season)
9) Bernice MacNaughton High School
10) Saint John High (Should be higher but will need to win tough games to move up)

Five of those top six (not Moncton) are in the Lion's Den tournament (Nov 16-18) along with Horton, CP Allen and Auburn Drive from Nova Scotia. Should be an excellent test early in the season. Hopefully everyone has their football players in uniform and healthy that weekend.

I'm not sure Riverview will be 7th best. They'll have McCluskey and Langille from the U17 team plus Elliot Quinn but rebuilding beyond that.

I agree Saint John High should be better than #10 and didn't do anything last year to be ranked higher, but a few of their key seniors really improved this summer playing on the Mill Rats Elite team. They also have a solid group of grade 10's that played BNB U15 this summer that are ready to contribute if they move up. They could climb up the rankings quickly if (big IF) they can play to their potential.

KVHS/FHS will be 1-2 all year long. I can't see anyone else getting to their level.

3. Moncton High - Can't see them beating 1 or 2 and were inconsistent last year.
4. Riverview - 3 Legitimate top flight players who know how to win in a school/program that has lots left in it even with changes.
5. St. Stephen - Cleary front runners in AA. Bench depth an issue and need to make outside shots to hang with the teams ahead of them.
6. HTHS - Might have a chance to be 2nd in the east but need to beat someone ahead of them first.
7. SJHS - POtential but hard to judge in a league with KV and not much else.
8. LHHS - Will be tough but where does offense come from.
9. BMHS - Every year seem to be around in the east but can't break through at sectionals. This year?
10. CNHS - Young and athletic. ADjustment to varsity and different style of coaching will be huge.

With some big games under our belt let see if we can shuffle this list out:

1) KVHS Good weekend at the Lions Den
2) Leo Hayes Bigg weekend also with a win over FHS and a 5 point loss to KV
3) FHS Im sure not the weekend they were hoping for. A first loss for a lot of those kids still a very talented squad dropped games to Aubern and LHHS
4)Simonds Big wins this week over Riverview who beat Moncton and SJHS
5) Riverview winning over moncton this week but dropping game a game to Simonds
6)Moncton Still chalked full of talent just need to get some wins on the board(I'm sure this is a bit of a football hangover and they will be up to speed soon)
7) St Stephen They are going to have to get some players healthy and have them stay healthy for this to be the season it is hyped up to be for them
8 ) JMH winning the Bathurst and Miramichi beating Bernice MacNaughton I think they are going to have to come out of the north and see how their physical style plays out. If they can stay in control and keep kids in the game they could be a dark horse
9)Bernice MacNaughton
10) Carlton North They are going to have to get some big games under their belt soon to see where they really fit in this mix

Regarding the Top Ten, Moncton High has not played a game yet. Their Junior Exhibition team lost to RHS Junior. Just to clarify.

Riverview beat Simonds to win the tournament, in a awful offensive showing missing 29 layups, easily could have been a 40 point game
Simonds also lost to St Macs who is not on this list with good reason
Riverview also beat HTHS not Moncton High by 28 in an exhibition game. Didnt see how HTHS did at the Lions Den
JMH from Miramichi did beat BMHS and they play Riverview on Wednesday
Moncton starts their season this weekend
FHS was less than a week off of thier football victory, dont know how many of those athletes are the same but I would expcet much more from them as the season goes on.
Leo Hayes had big wins and a close one to KVHS, surprised by them good wins early for their confidence

Simonds beat KV
So Simonds must get the number one spot
What does that say for teams who beat Simonds and who lost to KV
Looks like there should be a lot of movement in any boys top ten this year !
Awesome

KVHS lost to Simonds on Monday. KV then doubled RHS and won by 40 on Wednesday night. Last night, RHS beat Simonds in OT in their tournament. Does any of this make sense?

Rothesay has a good team. They've beaten Saint John High, Simonds and Sussex already. I think it's fair to say they would be a playoff caliber team if they were playing in the AAA South. Rothesay's biggest problem is depth on the bench. If they can control the pace and manage the fouls so they can keep their perimeter shooters in the game they are tough.

In the KV vs Rothesay game on Wed the teams were playing the annual Rip Seely game. Big event for both teams. The game was played at KV with about 700 noisy fans in attendance. KV was able to make it an up tempo game and got Rothesay into foul trouble.

Simonds is much like Rothesay...solid first unit but lacking depth off the bench. On Monday against KV they were able to make it a half court game (final score was 57-55) which was the perfect strategy since KV was playing their 6th game in 4 days and therefore had no legs left to make outsider jumpers.

All 3 teams are in the Rothesay High tournament this weekend. It will be interesting to see what adjustments are made 2nd time around with these match ups.

St Stephen Spartans over Leo Hayes by 1 tonight. Incredibly physical game that saw St Stephen get back in with back to back threes by Josh Dominie.

PostSubject: JMH Varsity Boys   Tue Nov 27, 2012 8:46 pm

Begging for games against top quality teams because of the Bathurst pull out of the North and going AA. A late start and not having a combined North East schedule has really put JMH Varsity Boys behind the 8 Ball. If any of the top ten Boys teams in the Province have any exhibition games left that could give JMH a few more meaningful games it would be appreciated by both the coach and the players.

PostSubject: CNHS and AAA   Wed Nov 28, 2012 7:45 am

CNHS seem to have a solid weekend for being young, they beat both HTHS and BMHS by double digits. and fell a close game to MHS losing by 2 while having a double digit lead going into the fourth. this team is young but they do not give up and will only get better. Jamie Gray seems to be an assitance coach who is a former acaa player at holland college and crandall and will be a great addition to that team. however I would still put SSHS a head of these guys as you cannot count out the champs.

AAA- teams seem to be bouncing around. simonds beating KV then losing to Rothesay. I know its early in the season however it looks like AAA is up for grabs.

Here's where I have the Varsity Boys teams throughout the province:

1. KVHS- probably the best team top to bottom...have the best players.
2. Fredericton High- team with the most depth in the province
3. St Stephen- 1 pt win at home over Leo Hayes and win over Trimble
4. Leo Hayes- played the top team close (with one win), but close games don't count. Need some wins otherwise should drop down
5. Moncton High- they haven't really played any games, but just think this is where they'll slot in.
6. James M Hill- have won a couple of good games against some teams within the province. Need to beat a "big" team.
7. Riverview- athletic and have some good wins.
8. Rothesay- playing very tough right now. Good wins over Simonds and Woodstock.
9. Woodstock- playing teams tough early on...good win over Simonds
10. Simonds- which team are they? Are they the team that played with and beat KVHS...or are they the team that lost to St Mac's

As someone said...truly think that this year is up for grabs. KVHS would be the favourite, but anyone seems to have the ability to win or even lose a game on any given day to any team.

BMHS and MHS have split two games so far this season, both close, competitive games
MHS downed Riverview last night by 13. Riverview was playing with out two starters but could not contain Rogers, he had a field day, probably 15 20 assists
That side of the province is going to be up for grabs and regardless how it falls those teams are going to be tough and able to beat each other night in night out
All three and HTHS are on the island for the Gray Cup this weekend, should be interesting

Simonds is in the Telegraph Journal again today as a feature story. It seems they are making a case for a top spot in both varsity and JV boys squads. The varsity team is inconsistent in tournaments but have a perfect record in conference play. Are they the front runner now for a trip to H.S.?

From the TJ: The team's early success is, in large part, thanks to the group of nine veteran players who are back with the Seabees for their senior years, said head coach Doug Deering, in his 10th season with the team.

"As veterans, they know what it takes. They put the team first over their individual talents, and they together want to achieve the ultimate goal of getting a provincial title." The provincials - hosted at Harbour Station - are a long way off, but the Seabees could be considered an early frontrunner for a spot in the title game after defeating every team in their conference following a 71-61 victory over the St. Malachy's Memorial High School Saints Tuesday night.

The Seabees had previously downed the Kennebecasis Valley High School Crusaders, the Saint John High School Greyhounds, the Sussex Regional High School Sonics and the Harbour View High Vikings.

"There are some impressive teams in this conference,"said Deering.

Time to take another look at this :

1) FHS they have beat KV in the head to head match up
2) KVHS Still pound for pound the best top end kids but do they have the bench and can they be consistent
3) LHHS split with FHS still winning big games beat up on James M Hill last week
4) Moncton coming out of the football hangover nicely
5)Carlton North great young squad big win over St Stephen and Bernice. AA needs to start talking about these guys
6)Bernice MacNaughton Beating Riverview and splitting with MHS
7)James M. Hill good squad got a taste of reality playing LHHS lets see how they respond
8 ) Rothesay wins over Simonds,SJHS,SSHS and big loses to JMH and KVHS It hard to read looks like if the 3's are falling they are hard to beat
9)St. Stephen low ranking due to the Rothesay and Carlton North loss. That being sade SSHS does not start strong they finish strong
10)Pick your poison a few inconstant teams Riverview,SJHS,Simonds. But I'll give it to Simonds since I read in the paper they are the best team in the South......

Those look to be pretty accurate to me. IT's early in the season and there are definitely inconsistencies in everybody's game. What will be a struggle for some teams is gaining consistency with a so-called "weaker" schedule. The "top" teams tend to set their schedules against other "top" teams and this can be a tough thing to break in to. It seems as though JMH is struggling with this type of situation.

This may need to be updated.

Top four are pretty good but after that: Woodstock has Beaten CNHS and SSHS on their home courts. Harrison Trimble has beaten those teams as well. Rothesay High School has also beaten SSHS. Simonds lost Fundy High School who will not even make it past the AA crossovers. SJHS lost in a tournament final to Hartland High School.
