PostSubject: 2012 Predictions 3A boys    Thu Oct 18, 2012 1:46 pm

This could be an interesting year for 3A judging from the number of players on the provincial teams. I don't know a lot about teams other than in the south. Some possible contenders:

South
Winston Churchill - key players returning with a good group of seniors this year
McCoy - ranked all of last year and only lost a couple players
Crescent Heights - a good mix of returning guards and forwards, maybe on the smaller side

Central
George MacDougall - huge lineup with a number of provincial team players (are they 3A this year?)
Canmore - a couple of provincial team players and they have some size
Chestermere - lost most of their size and Gill (UofC), some talented returning guards with provincial team experience
Cochrane - lost most of their starting guards and bigs - extremely good JV team last year

North
Camrose - won last year, who is returning?
St Albert - ?
Edmonton Christian - ? always seem to be strong
St Thomas Aquinas - ? they are provincials hosts
Wetaskwin - ?

Any guesses at rankings?

Edmonton Christian lost all of there key players to graduation and transfers however some younger players may step up. camrose loosing there big man and key gaurd will damper there chances at a repeat. St.albert is returning almost there whole team including a provincial team player and are very well coached. Wetaskawin should be competitive despite loosing there key player. Saint Thomas aquinas is returning most players but they lost there big man. However they are well coached.

I think the extremely good JV team from Cochrane you're referring to was 2 years ago when they went undefeated in their league and the 3A/4A south central zone and in 3A provincial competition. That same group will be this year's varsity team with a couple of key additions, 2 returning starters/POY candidates as well as the returning 6th man from last year's primarily grade 11 team that came in second at provincials.

George Mac played 4A last year when enrollment went over 800. They are back down to 783 this year and have declared 3A.

I suspect all 4 of those south central teams you have listed will be very good and will contend for a provincial title.

Leduc will be a strong contender this year. They have very strong guard play along with good depth from a strong group of Jv's moving up. This will likely be the quickest 3A team this year. Bigger, slower teams will have to be great at transition D. Basketball

What about teams like Louis St. Laurent & Beaumont Composite in Edmonton, Holy Trinity Academy in Okotoks or the larger independent schools like Ecole la Rose Sauvage? Anyone have information on what any of those teams look like this year?

Right now my preseason prediction would be:

1. George MacDougall
2. Winston Churchill
3. Canmore
4. McCoy
5. Crescent Heights
6. Chestermere
7. St Albert
8. Cochrane
9. Wetaskwin
10. Camrose

PostSubject: Early Ranking   Wed Oct 31, 2012 12:52 am

My predictions
1. St. Albert - many key returning players from provincials, any new additions?
2. Canmore - they were a year away last year, this is their year
3. Chestermere -well coached and descent balance
4. Camrose - 2 starting guards back and size.
5. Winston Churchill - deep but do they have the key players to put them into the elite ranking
6. Leduc - probably too low but may be too small to compete against the elite
7. George Mac - do they have any guard play to get the ball to their size? Do their bigs complement each other or just get in the way of each other.
8. Holy Trinity Okotoks - probably ranked too low but wins always help move you up.
9. St. Peter the Apostle - host school, live and die by the press. Last years 3A provincial final showed that the elite teams didn't waste their time pressing, they just punish you for trying!
10.Wetaskiwin 2010 and 2012 finalists, always got to respect them.

St.albert got arguably the best grade 10 in the province this year. As well as a couple strong juniors moving up. Who is returning on chestermere, and wetaskewin? Who graduated from Churchill?

1. George MacDougall
2. Winston Churchill
3. Canmore
4. McCoy
5. Crescent Heights
6. Chestermere
7. St Albert
8. Cochrane
9. Wetaskwin
10. Camrose

This is an interesting top 10 prediction. I guess it's good thing for alot of these teams that Brooks is going 4A again and nobody's mentioned them. They should be better than MacDougall, Churchill, McCoy, Crescent, Chestermere, and Cochrane.
They got wins against MacDougall, Churchill, and McCoy last year and return 4 starters.
Maybe they should stay 3A and be in the mix for the SEBC, SC Zone, and Provincials.

@cash9

Brooks comp at least has a chance in it zone if they play 4A an all they gotta beat to go provincials is Bert Church an Foothills but in 3A they gots zero chance cuz top 3 teams in province is all in this here zone and no one else in zone or province is close. Everybody else is fighting for 4.

1 Chestermere
2 Canmore
3 George Mac

1.Crescent Heights - although they graduated their big guy, they have many returning players especially guards who can score. Excellent coaching and a large area to draw players from
2. Chestermere - Gill is gone but they have many provincial team players in the last 5 years. Excellent coaching and I believe a few provincial team players are still there.
3. Winston Churchill - they were very young last year and have many 12s back. Very fast team with intense coaching. Playing in the south will benefit them.
4. Canmore - they are always pretty good and they have a couple of great big guys.
5. McCoy - good size and speed with a few shooters.
6. St Albert- a surprise last year and they have all of their key pieces except one big guy back
7. George MacDougall - huge size on the JV team last year. Do they have any shooters to prevent teams from falling into a zone or doubling the big guys?
8. Cochrane - they have established a culture of winning in the past 2 years. Although most of their key guys are gone, they won the south central zone 2 years ago as JVs. These are the grade 12s for this season so they can be top 3 if they have picked up any players to surround their grade 12s.
9. Wetaskwin - always well coached and always do well regardless of their talent.
10. Camrose - the surprise champions last year. lost many of their key guys but will still be a tough team

Thoughts?

It don't matter who your talking about. Grade tns don't matter. St Albert don't matter. Yall missing on Chestermere. They don't got competition. Maybe Canmore and George Mac but thats it. watch, they got too many weapons, 3balls, size , slashers to attack the rack, they gonna tear it up. its already over.

Question With all the amazing talent Chestermere had last year how is it they couldn't even manage to medal at provincials. Great tradition here! Must be all those provincial team players and provincial coaching.

Andrew is a strong player but stating that he is the best grade 10 in Alberta, pretty bold statement. Did he even play on the Provincial team?

Andrew is going to be an excellent player - he already is, however he is coming off ankle surgery that saw him miss playing on the provincial team and is just now starting to recover and be able to play. In addition, EVERY grade 10 has an adjustment period moving from junior high to high school - he will be playing at the Premier level against players bigger and stronger - so the learning curve will start immediately. Having coached a number of top level kids I've already seen and heard comments from him about mental toughness and working through the injury rehab etc. He is a gym rat and once he gets into shape and back into playing, he will be a great member of the Skyhawk team. He is someone to watch - but also have realistic expectations as well.
