Chambers, who has been teaching in B.C. since 1973, also served as B.C.’s Technical Reference for Basketball B.C./Canada Basketball and currently is the Head Coach of the boys Centre of Performance for Canada Basketball. He is a graduate of SFU with a BA in education, majoring in history and geography. For the past 40 years he has coached high school boys basketball in BC, leading his teams to two Provincial AAA Boys Championships and three times runner-up. In 2008, he was named the first head coach of the Vancouver Titans franchise, the first men’s IBL professional team in British Columbia. In addition, coach Chambers also has several years of university coaching experience, serving as the Head Coach for the UBC Men’s Basketball Team (1997-1998), an assistant with the SFU Men’s Team (2004-2005) and an assistant for the Women’s team at UBC (2006-2007). In 2010-2011, he was the Head coach of the University of Victoria women’s basketball team.
Since 2002, Chambers has been involved with Team Canada, serving as the head coach of the Canadian Junior National team for the past 6 years. As a Head Coach, he led Team Canada to a 5th place finish at U19 World Championships and a 9th place at the 2007 World Championships. The result in 2011 was not only the best outcome in Canada Basketball history, but also the first time Team Canada has ever beaten Team USA in international competition. Two of our 3D Alumni were members of this team under Chamber’s leadership. Chamber’s coaching awards include: The Tom Tagami Award for coaching excellence (2008), B.C. High School Coach of the Year (2003, 1985), The Gary Scott Award for coaching excellence (1998) and now his 2013 induction into the BC Basketball Hall of Fame.
Hanson, previous assistant to Chambers of the Terry Fox Ravens from 2006 – 2009, has now taken on the role of head coach winning the 2012 BC Boys AAA Championship. In addition to coaching the Ravens, Hanson has been the assistant coach for Canada Basketball’s Center for Performance as well as head Strength & Conditioning Coach since 2009. A former SFU BsEd graduate, Hanson’s experience is remarkable and includes training the following athletes who have gone onto succeed in the NHL, NFL & CFL: Jeff Tambellini (ZSC Lions, Vancouver Canucks), Corey Mace (Bufallo Bills, Calgary Stampeders) Eric Fraser (Calgary Stampeders), Quincy Hurst (Toronto Argonauts). Hanson’s experience also includes sharing his expertise as a guest speaker at Basketball BC Super Conference Speaker in 2010 on Speed Training for Basketball Athletes and becoming BCRPA High-Five Certified on Principles of Healthy Child Development. Along with Chambers, we are excited to welcome both coaches to our 3D family.
