100% agree 2 to 6 is up for grabs. Perhaps even 1 is up for grabs. KV and Sussex have two games in January that will sort out that rivalry. KV , Woodstock and Leo Hayes are in the same division at the Riverboat Jan 9-11. Fredericton is on the other side with Rothesay and SJ High. So you have 4 of the top 6 battling it out in a post turkey environment. Also have 8 and 9 team there to see if they can pull of an upset in crossover game.

No one that I have seen so far this year has an overwhelming inside game, so the perimeter shot is playing a big role in the outcome of games. A couple shooters get hot and the gap between 1 and 6 tightens.

Brady 12 great comment. About 50% of the games I watched this year allowed physical basketball as it should be played. Usually involved a senior ref.

I watched a game at Leo Hayes in early December which had great reffing. Girls scrapping for position in the post. Cutter getting bumped. One girl got a little frustrated on a rebound and swung the elbows too hard and they instantly called that as they should.

I watched a game two weeks ago in Saint John that was more like ballet. A kid is dribbling up the sideline out of control clearly. The defender makes a slight hip bump, purely incidental . The out of control girls goes sideways slightly but stays in bound and the whistle goes. Kids is making a shot and the defender has hands up, whistle goes even before the contact. Clearly all ball after it left the girls hand , but the call is made before the shot is released. Kids called on incidental bumps on the cutter. Takes the physical aspect out of the game.

Did the AAU circuit in US this summer. Almost no body contact fouls called at all!! The shooters arm was sacred, but go in for a layup and they would bump you sideways in mid air and there was no call. You go in the key without a clear path to the basket, and you are on your own, the ref is not bailing you out unless your arms gets whacked on the shot.

I think the physical play question is interesting. I agree that the game needs to be more physical and nothing makes me more upset then when I see stuff in a girls game get called for a foul/ dirty that is common place in a guys game. That being said the problem with the allowing the game to be more physical is that officials start allowing any sort of contact not on the ball handler or shooter to be allowed regardless of type. At nationals the game is phyiscal but the majority of the contact is caused by "tower" contact shoudlers, hips, chest/body. Contact with arms - hand checking, pushing with forearms, reacing in gets called pretty consistently. One of the problems I see is physical girls games is often times kids stop making any attempt to move their feet or create contact with their body and just start pushing/clutching and grabbing.

All that being said I think the difference you see in the top 4-6 girls teams and the next (especially those outside the top 10) is that they can compete, win and survive in any style of game including the physical contest. Most of the weaker teams don't have the horses either skill or physically to compete in those sorts of games. One of the reasons AAA teams dominate the top 10 is they have kids that can compete in any type of game and particularly the physical ones. They also get games called by a variety of officials and have to adapt, while a lot of smaller rural schools get a specific smaller group of officials consistently throughout their careers and come to expect to the game to look/be called a certain way. When they then won't/can't adapt they struggle.

THis isn't a criticism of officials. All areas of the province have goo, bad, ok and ugly. This is about players/ teams that aren't built with skills and conditioning/commitment to compete and play in variety of environments.

In terms of top 10:

1 - Fredericton
2 - KV - Seems odd to put they here after a loss but they are the only ones with consistent performances over the other top 10 teams and a win over FHS.
3 - Woodstock - THis may be high sinc both their wins over Sussex come at their home tournament where they have great support and play very well.
4 - Riverview - I'll put them here and might be better then this. Can't wait to see them healthy and all back together.
5 - Sussex - Big drop but looked very human at TVC only game where they were not challenged at any point was win over Caledonia.
6 - Leo Hayes - Probably too low here too but 2-6 are a crap shoot and they like the bulletin board material so I'll keep disrespecting my dark horse pick. Loss to Sussex though again has to have them lower.
7- BMHS - Nothing new to add.
8 - SJHS - Team on the rise getting better.
9 - Rothesay - Not sure if scores aren't coming in or they just haven't played a lot of people yet. Need to see more.
10 - JCS - THumped James M Hill, CNHS and have a win over WHS.

Next 5 - MVHS (good wins early not so much lately), James M Hill, Fundy, Tantramar, Caledonia.

KVHS defeats Sussex last night in Sussex in first league game between them. Lots of fouls called, KV up 3 at the half. Up by 15 or so after 3 and Sussex closed to 5 in the 4th. KV down a starter due to sickness. Riverboat this weekend.

1- KV - Asked for evidence and have recieved it. Strong play and performances in wins over Woodstock, Rothesay, Leo Hayes, and Sussex all in a week. Taking over #1 now someone has to take them down.
2 - Woodstock - Looked strong the last couple of weeks. 2 out of 3 tournament titles and a run to the final of the Riverboat with a win over FHS along the way.
3 - FHS- Didn't have an overwhelming performance all weekend at Riverboat. Offensive struggles showed up again and loss to Woodstock with just good enough performances over SJHS and Rothesay will not have their coaches happy. They've been finding ways to win maybe a loss gets them refocused. Clearly not clearly #1 anymore.
4- Sussex - Losses to Woodstock and KV recently but look as consistent as anyone else at this point.
5 - Leo Hayes - Losses aren't bad but its to everyone in front of them.
6 - Riverview - No idea who/what their deal is. Wins over top teams, losses to top teams. Big wins and losses in league play. Consistency is a huge issue, but upside seems solid.
7- BMHS - Need to win more vs teams ahead of them. Taking care of everything else though. Could be a someone to watch for come playoff time.
8 Rothesay - Made it to semi's of the Riverboat but still need them to beat someone else on this list to move them along.
9 MVHS - Everytime I think they've shown all they got them impress. League win vs Riverview again keeps them back in the top 10.
10 - SJHS- Showing positive signs as a young team but looked like young team vs top competition in Riverboat.

Next 5 - JCS, James M Hill, Fundy, CNHS, Caledonia.

One trend that seems to be happening is Home Court advantage seems to be making a huge difference. FHS wins both tournaments in F'ton. KV and Woodstock both win their own tournaments RHS beats KV at home MVHS beats BMHS and RHS at home. Seems to be a lot of examples of this. Any comments is it the fans at Home making a difference,Officiating etc... or just coincidence?

I would take Fredericton's home tournament "wins" with a grain of salt as there was no crossovers due to the weather. There were also 3-0 teams in the other divisions but instead of declaring co-winners, Fredericton claimed the titles

Some interesting scores from this week:

KVHS over Sussex by 2 in KV
BMHS over MVHS by 25.
LHHS over FHS by a hoop.

Leo Hayes downs Saint John High by 10. Saint John High leading in 3rd quarter and then ran out of steam. Going to be some tight battles in the AAA playoffs. Looks like it is tightening up.

1- KV - Got their money's worth from Sussex and definitely are not unbeatable but still on top of the heap.
2 - Woodstock - Looked strong the last couple of weeks. 2 out of 3 tournament titles and a run to the final of the Riverboat with a win over FHS along the way. Not sure how many more quality games they have on their schedule but definitley haven't done anything to get bumped out.
3- Sussex - Hard to get bumped up on a loss but played KV tough in KV's place. Probably a little high here right now but we'll see what the Dairy Town brings.
4 - FHS - Another bad looking loss at LHHS. ONly keeping them here because when they lose to LHHS its by a little and when they beat them its a lot.
5 - Leo Hayes - Good win vs FHS, beat SJHS but score was closer then I would have thought. Hard to tell where this group will end up, but will give anyone a game.
6 - Riverview - No news is good news I guess. Trying to get everyone healthy for a big push. Team has the potential to be better then this but needs consistency down the stretch.
7- BMHS - Took care of buisness vs MVHS. Dominated a low scoring game. They need to make some noise against these top teams to move up.
8 Rothesay - Beating the teams they should beat. Losing to other top 10 teams. Would like to see them in more games or at least see more scores.
9 MVHS - Loss to BMHS is a step backwards, but should still be easily top 3 in the NE.
10 - SJHS- Look very competitive in losses to top squads. They may make the SW regional interesting, but need to get over the top and beat someone not jsut compete.

Next 5 - JCS, James M Hill, Fundy, CNHS, Caledonia

Miramichi Valley vs. Saint John High tomorrow afternoon at the Rothesay tournament. They both will also face KV in a round robin game. The winner of MVHS/SJHS game will probably get Rothesay in the cross over semi-final. This should be the final word on the bottom half of the top 10 before the playoffs.

Will RHS still have the Flood girl for this tournament? Word on the street is they are losing her next semester as she moves . . .?

Rothesay put Simonds and Tantramar in their division in the round robin, so with or without the Flood girl, I have a hunch they will finish first in their division. Keep you posted if Flood plays tomorrow. As coach of Fundy, your playoff run may have a vested interest if she is in our out;)

Not as much as us getting our poop in a group for 40 minutes will. That and regional format means we probably won't get to see them again anyway.

Welcome to high school basketball;) Saint John High has the exact same challenge on the organization side. Can put together a quarter or two when they look like they could knock of top teams, and then whammo back to turnover heaven and forcing contested three pointers 6 seconds into the shot clock without a rebounder within 15 feet of the hoop.

LIttle to no significant movement after exam week and most games being cancelled because of weather in the South this past weekend.

1- KV - Sttill on top of the heap.
2 - Woodstock - Continue to be strong and play tough.
3- Sussex - Hosting the Dairytown looking to repeat this should be more telling for them.
4 - FHS - Getting back on track. Need to see/beat some of these top teams.
5 - Leo Hayes - Right about where they should be didn't look great vs FHS on the weekend.
6 - Riverview - If someone below them will beat them I can move them down until then nada.
7- BMHS - May be peaking at the right time we'll see.
8 - MVHS - This might be a little high but no one else to take it yet.
9 - SJHS- Could be higher or lower then this. THe deal with a young team is just that, but playing better and better as year goes on.
10 - Rothesay - Still arguably the 2nd best team in AA but losing your only interior presence and Canads games team player to another Country and becoming even shallower on the bench doesn't bode well. Their key players will need to step up come playoff time.

Next 5 - JCS, Fundy, Caledonia, Canterbury, SVHS

I think Rothesay has to be 9 since they handily beat Saint John at the Riverboat. Saint John is a mystery. Played terrible against MVHS at Rothesay tournament. Played a terrible half against KV. Down by 25+ at half and then get there act together and win the second half and give KV their toughest game at the Rothesay tournament. They then finally wake up on Saturday and unleash on Simonds.

KV -60 - Saint John 45. Saint John had it down to 5 at the end of the 3rd quarter and then faded in the 4th and turned the ball over too many times. KV pretty shallow on the bench. A lot of girls logging a bunch of time. Could be their down fall as they slog through three weekends of playoff basketball.

KVHS Girls had another big tournament win at the Dairy Town, very nice to see this team doing so good with the short bench, all are healthy and awaiting the regionals this week-end....
