Yes, this year seems like a rarity having only 2 teams competing that are ranked in the Pre-Season Top 10, 2012 had 7 teams out of the Pre-Season Top 10, 2011 had had 8 out of the Top 10, and 2010 had 5 out of the Top 10. Not sure how selections differed for this year as years past did in fact have many more of the top teams in the Province.

Semi's are set for the Telus Classic, should be a fun night, Churchill's high-powered offense led by the Minhas brothers Mindy and Gary taking on Holy Cross' length, speed and strength led by the Madu brothers Henry and Stanley. While the Bby South Rebels brand of small ball with a balanced attack and varied weapons from behind the arc led by star-shooter Martin Bogajev take on perennial Howe Sound favorite Handsworth led by ultra quick guard Adam Karmali.

Semi-Final 1
Holy Cross vs Churchill @ Churchill 5:45P
Semi-Final 2
Bby South vs Handsworth @ Churchill 7:30P

How was the HC and Abby game? Was it really that close throughout?

Any predictions for the semi's tomorrow?

Abby plays very well together and they have some very good shooters. They are presently ranked #3 "AAA" Holy Cross was in control for much of the game but Abby hung in tough and every time HC got a double digit lead Abby would come back to keep it in single digits. I actually thougth HC showed a lack of discipline at times, I think maybe they were looking past Abby a bit. I was also told that Bennet-Boire may be eligible now so he could be playing for HC very soon

Our Palmer vs Panorama Ridge game was very high scoring as we won 104 to 81. Nimrit Plaha put up 26 points for Panorama while Harmon Mann had 25 and Antonio Jhutty had 46 for Palmer.

Antonio Jhutty, is one player that never gets into the discussions of top notch BC high school players. I for one know that this kid is ultra talented and is One of BC finest. So I’m giving a big SO to Antonio… Great game, great player! Good luck to the rest of the season Antonio.

According to Ebe it appears all Holy Cross players will have their eligibility to play this year. I have been told that many coaches are disturbed what has taken place. It is a full demonstration that BCSS in inept and powerless and therefore the coaches need to put in a petition to absolve the BCSS and create a new legislative body with rules/regulations/provisions to address the critical issues that are occurring in today's environment. This is required to protect and preserve the integrity of the game in BC for the future before this potentially comes systemic. I was told by a CIS head coach scouting the Telus Tournament that the HC players are so physically developed that it makes the other players look like...well, like regular high school players. Of course this will have a significant impact on basketball landscape as HC will have a roster that maybe more talented than any other, but again this is why we play the game. I guess this weekend's Telus Championship will be telling if any top teams can compete with them. I will try and get out there this weekend and get a look for myself.

Saw some of the Tsumura Basketball Invitational last week and thought it was a great event. I was very disappointed in the effort level of some players of the Select team on Sunday. They lacked effort and competitive drive. Some looked like they did not event want to be there. I think one team should be selected of the best players who really want to compete and they should practice beforehand. As good as Findlay Prep is I believe that BC's best this year could have competed and made it a lot closer game especially if the fair play was not in play. Some players like Etienne, Cohee, Bains and Sparks-Guest competed nicely and represented themselves well, but given their athleticism, size, length and skill, can easily play at that level and to me have very bright futures ahead of them in university.

Here's to a great weekend of hoops santa

Results for Friday December 6

Semi-Final 1
Churchill 57 vs Holy Cross 45 @ Churchill
Mindy Minhas 16 pts, Izaiah Ugoalah 12 pts
Taylor Browne 11 pts, Stan Madu 8 pts

HC led for 36 min. and used their length to to make Churchill's scorers take tough shots but ran out of gas in the final qtr. HCs Taylor Browne led his team in scoring but missed some key early minutes as he got a bloody nose after a Mindy Minhas drive less than a min. into the game and had to sit out the whole 1st qtr. eventually playing with a tissue up his nose the rest of the game. Mindy Minhas led the Bulldogs but had a tough shooting night guarded by a myriad of HC's long forwards. Churchill ended the game on a 12-0 run, as Gr.10s Karn Virk and Izaiah Ugoalah hit some big shots. Story of the game was Churchill's dominant 26-7 4th qtr, and the 23-8 disparity in bench scoring, thanks to big 4th qtrs. for both Virk and Ugoalah.

Semi-Final 2
Bby South 86 vs Handsworth 61 @ Churchill
Bby South lit if up from the 3 pt line and took a quick 20 pt lead in the 1st qtr and never looked back. Bby South is full of gun slingers including Martin Bogajev, Nic Trnic, Jermaine Haley, Tyus Batiste and when they're on they are hard to stop.

Thanks for the recap Jesus. Tonight's final should be a good one. Churchill will be in tough against all the scorers from Bby South but their relentless defense should keep it close.

I agree wholeheartedly with what I bolded. Not that I don't agree with the rest of your post, but I especially agree with these statements.

One team, selected beforehand, that practised for a bit under a coach and was not subjected to equal playing time would be great to show off BC's very best against a team such as Findlay Prep.

EDIT: but really, this should be posted in the Tsumara Invitational topic so as not to thread hijack.

Great ball game between two ranked and led by younger players teams. Churchill was a 3 pointer away from sending the game into OT.

Ugoalah made a name for himself and despite him scoring most of his points in the first half (he was the only consistent thing going for them in the 1st), his defense can't go unnoticed. This kid is VERY long and will cause problems for not only guards, but even post players as he shows an understanding of when to go up for the block. Mindy, Gary and Karn struggled and if it wasn't for Trinic showing up in the last few minutes (he was virtually scoreless all game), Churchill could have pulled out with a win.

Either way, both teams got some big points from their bench and Thursday's rematch at South (3:30) will hopefully be just as good.

Jesus, I was hoping for a bit of a recap for both these games from you. I see Kongbo dominated with 31 Points but what about Taylor and the others. Was the final score indicative of the entire game?

The final seems to have been a great game with balanced scoring from both teams.

Thanks!

Your summary pretty much sums up what was wrong with this showcase. All the players you mentioned all played on Saturday except for Cohee who definitely would have played on Saturday but had a game with his HS team. The Sunday line up was lacking in scoring, size and athleticism. Not to mention they had 12 players and were rotating every 4 minutes. Hard to get into any kind of groove especially when some players got a total of three shifts.

Hopefully next year we have a showcase of the top teams in BC competing against each other. Not sure if we as a basketball community want to adopt the same values as our counterparts in the states. Do a quick google search for "Findlay prep" and read some of the articles. This will never be the norm for Canadian kids and it really shouldn't be. Focus should be on academics and if you are good enough you will be found.

Just look at this years group of players that are already signed on to play at the next level. Names that come to mind are:

M Manhas
J Cohee
T Etienne
D Sparks-Guest
G Gailbraith

And I'm sure there will be many more from this group that will be heading off to play at the next level. Prep school was not required for any of these players. Hard work, passion and a desire to succeed is what these guys to the next level.

I would love to know if anyone can list some BC players that went to prep school and where they are now in their basketball careers.

Sorry for the late recap but I was extremely busy Saturday going from various tournaments across the mainland, I put on some serious KMs that day haha. But the Holy Cross and Handsworth game pretty much boiled down to Holy Cross power in the paint, where Kongbo and H. Madu combined for over 50 pts. HC led by about 10 pts from start to finish, couldn't pull away as Handsworth knocked down a bunch of 3's and played hard throughout. Taylor was plagued with foul trouble and fouled out on a Tech. early in the 3rd, the Crusaders got great bench minutes from Gr.10 Pg Alex Asperin. But it was basically the Jonathan Kongbo show, ran point bringing the ball up, and bulled his way through any Handsworth player who was unfortunate enough to get assigned to guard him in the post. I can't recap the Final game as I had to head to a Jr. Boys tourney final but Coach Yash did a great job recapping it above.

Boys Tournament All Stars:
Jermaine Haley (Burnaby South)
Djordje Obradovic (Burnaby South)
Mindy Minhas (Churchill)
Izaiah Igoalah (Churchill)
Gary Minhas (Churchill)
Jonathan Kongbo (Holy Cross)
Antonio Jhuti (RC Palmer)

Quinn Keast Memorial Scholarship Fund - Most Complete Player:
Taylor Smith (Burnaby South)

Mayor Larry Campbell, City of Vancouver Unsung Hero Award:
Jeff Gourley (Head Coach of Sir Charles Tupper)

Randy Sung Memorial Award – Most Sportsmanlike Team:
Richmond Colts – Les Brown Head Coach
