PostSubject: District 4 Invitational in Calgary   Mon Nov 25, 2013 4:12 pm

A new tourney has been put together in Calgary co-hosted by Father Lacombe and Forest Lawn on Nov 28-30 and financially supported by a group of Calgary business/basketball people that for the past few years has been supporting boys high school basketball players in the NE area of Calgary - from what I have heard they have been there to pay fees, buy shoes, help with travel and spring ball expenses - awesome stuff and now they have a tourney with some pretty strong teams! The draw is a bit goofy with some high ranked teams playing each other in round 1 but that I suppose is up to the hosts! 16 team tourney as follows (in order of the bracket):

Father Lacombe (#8 Calgary) vs Central Memorial
Canmore vs Notre Dame
BOB vs SWC (#2 and #4 Calgary teams)
O'Leary vs Golden
Grandin vs Bowness
Forest Lawn vs St Gabriel
McNally vs Western (#1 and #7 in Calgary)
Ernest Manning (#6 Calgary) vs Sturgeon

That is quite a draw. Is there a schedule with dates, times and locations of the games on a web site somewhere or is that something you can post? I assume its at both Father Lacombe and Forest Lawn high schools.

Thanks for posting that.

Is there a backside schedule? I'd like to see those top teams play as they're coming south for tournaments later in December but I'm not in Calgary until Saturday and that wacky draw puts some of them in the consolation side right away.

this looks like a cool tournament

would be even better if there was 1-2 more Edmonton teams and 1-2 south teams

who are you guys predicting in the first round, 2nd, and so on?

Pretty good first day of hoops in Calgary!

On the top side of the draw, Father Lacombe handled Central and then Notre Dame to advance to the semi while SWC beat BOB in round 1 but then lost to O'Leary 65-61. Lacombe plays O Leary at 11:45am at Lacombe.

On the bottom side Forest Lawn smoked St Gabriel and then beat Grandin to advance while Western had a big day knocking off preseason #1 McNally by 15 in the first round and then got by Manning by 10 in round 2. Forest Lawn plays Western at 11:45am at Forest Lawn. Western was even playing shorthanded with a few guys off at volleyball provincials but they have a kid Noma Obaseki (from the U17 AB team) who played tremendously in both games. Their point guard Amitaj Rehill played great as well - they have no big inside but several shooters and they shot the lights out from 3 point land in the win over Manning.

On the consolation side, Canmore plays BOB at 10am at Lacombe and McNally plays Bowness at 10am at Forest Lawn.

Didn't see the final but O'Leary beat Western in the final by 20. There was no 3rd place game.

McNally beat BOB in consolation final by 10.

Only saw a few of teams and don't know all stars but Kamba for McNally looked great but his team wasn't very organized - they have a handful of exceptional athletes while Western looked very good and well coached.

Manning looked pretty good as well but I only saw games on that half of the draw.

And the higher hoops tourney starts tomorrow so more good matchup to come.

Was not at any of the games but this is what family that were at the games had to say...

BOB is not the Calgary #2 team. They lost two of three. Western is far better than most thought. Good size but need to shoot more consistently. Oleary lived up to early reputation. Big, strong and above average guard play. Churchill looks very competitive with a 14 point win over BOB, a last second loss to Oleary {they tied the game with little time on the clock but were called with an offensive foul to lose} and a 40 point win over Notre Dame. Manning is going to be better than most thought and also have good size. I also heard good things about Forest Lawn in their first year of Div. 1. Also told that McNally just played poorly in their first game against Western and should still be considered the #1 team in Calgary and possibly Alberta.

I'm hearing forest lawn has some good size which have western problems for a bit

And that oleary was just too strong to handle

Heard manning is a very good team

But lack of a bit of depth hurt them against western

Sounds like forest lawn has alot of upside and could surprise people

Also what's up with grandin
Notre dame

I should add a huge congratulations to Calgary businessman Adam Woodward (leading an initiative called The Big Give" supporting athletics in NE Calgary providing opportunities to kids that need some financial support) who along with Genesis Basketball (Eddie Richardson) put this tournament together. There was no entry fee for the teams, tons of great giveaways including NBA jerseys for game MVPs, enough pizza to feed 16 boys teams and even some of their fans!, club basketball sponsorships and 5 $1000 scholarships for post secondary education for 5 deserving participants - great stuff! Sadly neither local newspaper picked up on it as it was a fantastic tournament - maybe next year..

And Grandin and ND will have tough years. I watched Grandin get beat by Manning by 40 with Manning rolling lines all game long. Only recognized one kid from Grandin's team last year and he did not play much last year.
