Sweet basketball on display at Sugar Bowl

By Purcell, Dylan on December 26, 2013.

When there’s snow on the hills Lethbridge’s Sugar Bowl provides plenty of thrills and chills. Raymond’s Sugar Bowl, a boys’ high school invitational tournament extravaganza, has also entertained thousands of folks for almost half a century. In fact, the 47th renewal is set for Friday and Saturday at Raymond High School, along with one tilt at adjacent Raymond Junior High.

Sugar Bowl organizers take great pride in the copious evidence that shows success in Raymond often leads to a unlimited-enrolment (called 4A since 1975) Alberta Schools Athletic Association title banner in March. Once again this year, it seems very plausible the ultimate Wild Rose Country champ is entered.

Four of the top-six ranked teams in the province are on hand, including Edmonton Harry Ainlay (No. 2), two-time defending 4A champs Cardston (No. 3), Edmonton Ross Sheppard (No. 4) and LCI (No. 6.) All have won multiple unlimited enrolment provincial championships in the past, as have fellow Sugar Bowl entrants Magrath and Raymond, who top the all-time provincial table. If I’ve done the math correctly (always a challenge for me) that’s 28 total ASAA unlimited enrolment titles out of 57 total all-time!

Friday’s first game features Okotoks Foothills versus LCI at 2:30 p.m. On that side of the draw Ainlay and Magrath take to the hardwood at 4:30 p.m. The host Comets tangle with Calgary Centennial at 6:30 p.m., with Shep and Cardston in the 8:30 p.m. opening night finale. And what a contest it could well be between two top-four ranked teams, who have already split tournament tussles this month.

Yes, Magrath played very well. I think the South may be up for grabs as Med Hat is big and shoots the lights out at times as well. It will come down to who gets hot down the stretch. Cardston/LCI/Med Hat/Magrath are all in the hunt!

Ya Magrath's backcourt is small but talented and they did a solid job vs Ainlay.

Well this tells us a few things.

1. The Edmonton teams are not heads and shoulders better than the rest of the province as the coaches up there would like us to believe.

2. The South is wide open. Can't wait for some meaningful league games.

3. The province really does not have a favorite right now unless you consider O'Leary.

Should be an excellent and very competitive provincial championship.
