With Zones underway, predictions for the Alberta's 'sweet sixteen' and a potential draw (unless we see some upsets - not really upsets but Scona and McNally have ended their run at zones):

link to the official site: http://provincials.asaa.ca/tournament.cfm?s=85

Top Bracket
01 Raymond
16 Grand Prairie (did they decline or was it Lloyd? if so, another south team?)

08 Bert Church
09 SWC

05 JP
12 Med Hat/LCI (Magrath lost, LCI could sneak in!)

04 St FX
13 Scona O'Leary/Sturgeon (*same zone - switch with Hunting Hills?)

Bottom Bracket
03 Western
14 Hunting Hills (*switch with O'Leary/Sturgeon - avoid 2 teams same zone?)

06 Ross Shep
12 McNally Bishop Grandin

07 Notre Dame (loss may move them to 8th - switch with BC?)
10 Harry Ainley

02 Cardston
15 Fort MacMurray

Scona from Edmonton has been eliminated. They can not make provincials. Same with Bishop McNally from Calgary they are eliminated and can not make provincials as well.

How is Edmonton doing their provincial berths now that they get 5 berths? Does that out Scona back in the mix? Grand Prairie declined their berth, so with 5 edmonton teams and not having teams from the same zone play each other in the first round, that will make a pretty solid edmonton team with a pretty low seed.

The process for Edmonton schools is far too complicated to understand, so here is a link to the Crossover schedules. The site is updated every day, so you can follow the scores. It is a crossover style format with the following 6 teams, battling for 4 (now 5 with the Wildcard) spots in the Provincial Tournament. Below is the tournament schedule link:

http://www.telusplanet.net/public/metroedm/Basketball/bb4ABoysGirls.pdf

In simple terms, the top 3 in both the Public and Metro Leagues play a mini tournament, with the league champions guaranteed a spot, and the tournament determining the seeds going to Provincials.

Public Metro
1. Jasper Place 1. St. Francis Xavier
2. Ross Sheppard 2. Archbishop O'Leary
3. Harry Ainlay 3. Sturgeon

In the end, once you lose two games, you are out, so one of these 6 will not be making the trip south.

I think Scona should be able to get back in the mix. I don't know how, but you have a ranked team out of provincials and either Sturgeon or O'leary able to make it. Neither of those teams will win a game at Provincials.

Unfortunately Scona had the same opportunity as everyone else and choked on their own putrid performance! They were up by about 15 points at one point against Harry Ainlay in the Bronze game, but somehow managed to blow it and lose by 5. Yes, they had a good season, but didn't come up with very good performances when it counted. You are right that Sturgeon and O'Leary will be lucky to win a game at Provincials, but you have to earn your way there first, and Scon blew their chance.....nuff said.

With the JP win over St. FX it will be interesting to see how the provincial rankings will sort out for the edmonton teams. JP beat St. FX in a 4th quarter comeback. Congrats to JP the best team in the metro Edmonton area. Interesting that the two best teams in Edmonton are just blocks away from each other.

Scona had a good year too bad they won't get a look at provincials. #9 the gaurd was a very nice player this season.

heres my opinion:

1 RHS
2 Western Canada
3 Cardston
4 JP
5 Ross Shep
6 Grandin
7 St Francis X
8 Bert Church
9 Ainley
10 ND
11 CCH
12 Oleary
13 Huntington Hills
14 @nd seed from South central?
15 Med Hat
16 North rep

I wasnt sure if south central got a 2nd bid. Nontheless its not important.

Not sure it will shake out that way because you would then have 3 edmonton teams in the same bracket...the 4, 5 and 9. I think either Shep or Ainlay will drop a spot...not sure which one will though. I guess we`ll see...

Trey factor you are correct but I feel like the ranking committee will try to balance out JP, Shep, ST FX and Ainlay.

Smash, where did you get this 'official' information - are you on the ranking committee? (There isn't any info on the asaa website yet.)

How are RS and St FX ranked below BC? (BC lost to both these teams) - RS should be 5th and St FX 6th (since Shep just beat them) with BC 7th.

If you are correct, the draw should look like this:

01 Raymond
16 Grand Prairie

08 Grandin
09 Harry Ainley

05 Bert Church (should be RS)
12 Catholic Central

04 JP
13 Hunting Hills

03 Western
14 Med Hat

06 Shep (should be JP)
11 SWC

07 St. FX (should be BC)
10 ND

02 Cardston
15 OLeary

I agree it is strange they would put BC above Shep AND FX
Especially considering FX beat BC by over 30 the last time they played, just under a month ago.

Anyways Smash is correct the standing have been posted on the website for provincials already:

Smash was right, but is now wrong! The original post on the ASAA website originally agreed with his post, but the draw does not:

Catholic Central is now ranked #11 and SWC is #12 (click on the draw to see the new numbers) - perhaps there was mascot confusion (Bulldogs!)

First off, congratulations to the players/coaches of CCHS - this is why we love the game, finishing 6 out of 7 in league and then coming through to stun Med Hat with a win to finish 3rd in playoffs - great job and good luck at provincials.

However, speaking to the politics now, as great as that win is - how can anyone explain your #11 berth at provincials? Med Hat was ranked #13. This stinks of last years questionable rankings as that CCHS team that was overcredited all season long - maybe someone has a good explanation.

Other than that odd ranking, this week should be great! I'm sure they'll be exciting games and a few upsets. Good luck to all the teams and may the best team win.

I guess regardless if we agree or disagree with the seedings you have to win four games. Sonner or later you have to play the best. Predictions? Will we see another Raymond- Cardston final? Will there be any major upsets?

i don't want to argue too much about your predictions but i think if fx gets a rematch against western they'd pull off the win, say what you want about fx's loss to shep for seeding but that was shortly after a true heartbreaker and i think a lot of teams would have had trouble in the same scenario

i agree with runnin red. Fx was on a loss hangover and probably was not into the shep game. I didnt see the game but they were probably really careless and not playing with emotion. Fx should be a team to watch as should jp, because when they are hot and their d is rollin......look out

Raymond vs Grande Prairie - an additional practice for Raymond.

Bishop Grandin vs HA- look for this excited Calgary team to come out and have a great game. Ainley has come on at the end of the season so it will still be an interesting game.

JP vs Med Hat - unless the stars align with south refs, this is a blow out for JP

BC vs SWC - the grudge match - these teams are 1-1 in tournaments - it'll be about containing the mountains in the middle.

Cardston vs O'Leary - give Cardston the nod.

Notre Dame vs St FX - this may be a stretch, but ND has some impressive wins - they can play the big game.

Western vs Hunting Hills - shooting practice for Western

RS vs CCHS - despite the 'meteoric' rise of CCHS - look for Shep to dominate.

Quarter finals:

Raymond vs Grandin - another practice for #1

BC vs JP - can BC get redemption for letting their last game against JP slip away?

Cardston vs ND - ND are too exhausted from ST FX game

Western vs RS - RS will make this game tight, too bad their big man is out

Good luck all

My prediction is a rematch of the south zone final !! Raymond vs Cardston !! Its always a good game. I was able to attend that game and the province is in for a treat if these two teams are there again. If cardston comes out and plays in the first five mintues of the game, they have a chance to win. Cardston was down by 15+ in the first 6 min of the zone final game but fought back to within 3 and ran out of time... If they play the whole 40 min. It will be a good game. Good luck to everyone at the provincial tournament this year !!

i doubt bert church beats churchill let alone a extremely hot jp team that has knocked off two impressive wins in a row against top ten teams

i know bert church is a good team they just aren't deep enough to go that far, at least not this year
