PostSubject: Nov 12 Fredericton high vs fundy   Thu Nov 13, 2014 8:25 am

I heard Fredericton high only beat fundy by 15 and that it was close for most of the game. Anyone know how the teams played?

I've got an idea about how they played Wink

FInal score was 55-40. Black Kats up 14 at half. Never closer the 8-10 in the 2nd half. Both teams played everyone. Fredericton went deeper into their bench for longer stretches then Fundy. Both teams did a much better job of expending energy on defense then being efficient on offense.

Physical game. Hardly a possession without a body on the floor and ball popping loose. Looked a lot more like a loose ball drill at football practice then a basketball game. Fredericton struggled to make shots from the outside contested or not. Only 1 player from Fundy could consistently score. Fredericton starters struggled with foul trouble and finishing. All in all what ugly Nov basketball looks like. Fundy kids competed to stay around, Fredericton kids couldn't make enough shots or plays to get seperation.

Both teams played base m2m defense and offense the entire game.

Miramichi Tournament Update

SJHS rolls over Amherst 79-43 in on semi- fInal
Sussex flys by MVHS 74-39 in the other semi-final

Clash of what is probably going to be 2 out of the top 4 or 5 teams in the province tomorrow afternoon.

LHHS tourney update for girls

Looks like Leo Hayes will meet up with FHS in a battle of the bridge while Bernice MacNaughton takes on KV in the other semi.

Hard to say who will come out on top at this point. BMHS looking pretty strong

Pretty sure its Riverview Vs. BMHS and not KV. Round robin standings have Fred 3-0, Riverview 2-1, KV 1-2 and Rothesay 0-3.

Other side was BMHS 3-0, Leo 2-1, Woodstock 1-2 and Moncton 0-3. So Fred will take on Leo as you mentioned in other semi.

All things said unless something funky went down after we left the gym, lol.

Sussex defeats SJHS 71-57 in final of Miramichi tournament.

Sussex definitely the better team on the court. There size caused issues when Saint John bigs got into foul trouble. Being interesting to see if this score gets any closer as year goes on.

Anyone have semifinal scores for Lions Den? I see the score of the final on Twitter. Curious about the score between BMHS and Riverview.

Early yet, but looks like Sussex and Freddy each won the tournaments over the weekend and are the teams to beat. Does anybody know when these two teams might meet each other? It looks like bigs from both teams were hard for their opponents to deal with in both finals. Is there any press on the Miramichi games published anywhere?

I also didn't see much of any full court presses being applied on the weekend. Is that because it's too early, or are coaches too afraid of the foul trouble it seems to inevitably lead to when they aren't applied correctly?

Here's my adjustments post Lion's Den and Miramichi classic

1. Fredericton - undefeated so far this season. Lion's Den Champs with wins over top 10 teams Leo Hayes, KVHS, Rothesay and Riverview, as well as MVHS last week. Balanced attack from the post and great outside shooting. Unbeatable? No, but will be tough.

2. Sussex - Also undefeated so far this season. Winners of the Miramichi Classic with wins over SJHS and MVHS, also beat a strong Fundy team recently. Best team right now to challenge the Black Cats.

3. Riverview - Moving up with a good second place showing at Lion's den. Defeated BMHS, KVHS and Rothesay. Strong play coming from their seniors and deep bench to supplement starting line up. Struggled with shooting over the weekend but made up for it on the defensive end. League games versus MVHS and BMHS over next 2 weeks are big ones for the Lady Royals.

4. Saint John - Good jump from pre season pick with a huge win over BMHS in the defending champs own gym. Placed 2nd in Miramichi Classic losing to Sussex in final. Going to have to work hard to keep this spot.

5.BMHS - Have to drop the Highlanders, but don't expect them to stay here for long, the girls are just off to a bit of a bad start. Things were like this last year if everyone remembers and then "BOOM!!" the coach hauls out the 1-3-1 zone at end of season and picks top teams off one by one until the end. Don't under estimate or take this team for granted. Seen what they can do in match up with Leo with a 40 point win over the Lion's Den hosts, but with loses to Riverview and SJHS have to drop them here.

6. Leo Hayes - Host team unable to finish 1 or 2 in home tournament and big loses to BMHS and rival Fredericton drops them down the list. Expect the Lion's to lick their wounds and come back a better team. Still one of my favorite NB teams (beside my beloved Royals that is). Good coaching staff and dedicated players will make things hard for the top 5 teams over the season, expect a challenge every time out of the gate. Team did post wins over MVHS and Woodstock so not all things bad for the Lions.

7. Fundy - Don't be surprised to see them on this list. Fairly close game with Fredericton just over a week ago shows they can play with the big AAA teams. Will more than likely be AA Harbour Station favorite.

8. KVHS - Missing key player at Lion's den, but don't think it would have made a big difference in the long run. Going to be a tough season for the Crusaders. Lots of young talent but won't be a factor this season. Can see another drop before any type of jump.

T-9. Woodstock - Not off the list yet but needs to get things fired up and start getting some wins over competitive teams.

T-9. Rothesay - Same as Woodstock, needs to get a quality win to move or will fall off list.

10. MVHS - Just hanging on by a thread, early losses to top teams (Fredericton, Leo Hayes and Sussex) and not finishing in top spots in home tournament keeps them on the bottom. Big league game versus Riverview on Wednesday, will have to beat them or come close in order to move up.

1. Fredericton - No one's found a way to crack the Kitty yet. When on have looked dominant, when off are still tough enough to find ways to win. Need to consistently make outside shots but have lots of weapons and ways to score.

2. Sussex - Fast pace and built to pressure. They can defend and play in the half court too, but are best playing in the full court. Need to see them against someone who they can't turnover as frequently but with a depth of talent and athletes might not get that until much later in the season when teams can plan for them.

3. Riverview - Impressive performances at Lions Den. Showing better early then I would have thought. Tough defense, finding ways to get balanced offense. Better depth then teams may have given them credit for.

4. SJHS - Wins over BMHS and solid showing vs Sussex are both enough to put them here. Deep, lots of scoring punch. Need to get up lots of shots and want to play at pace. May cause them problems with teams like Sussex who is better then them at that, or teams who can control the pace and pound inside. Only the top teams in NB can do either though so they should have solid season here if they keep growing.

5. BMHS - Solid Lion's Den. Tough home loss to SJHS. RIght in the mix. Turnover of talented kids learning their way on a varisty team is tough. Also based on experience they break out more defense and tactics as the year goes on so hopefully no one forgets about them this year.

6. LHHS - Gritty tough team. Can look like world beaters and then look awful. Need more consistent play and scoring. Tough to win ugly every night vs top level teams and talent. Will be there in the end but need to put in a solid performance agaisnt 1 of the above teams to move on up.

7. KVHS - Struggles early but that was to be expected. Young and building. Will improve as year goes on, but not sure they have the toughness or talent to take down teams ahead of them. They may need to prove me wrong.

8. WHS - Rough outing at the Lion's Den but thats why they play those games. Battle tested early and play vs high level. THey will be right there when its all said and done in AA.

9. Rothesay - Didn't look great but putting it together too. Not the team they expected but enough talent to be competitive in AA.

10. MVHS - Playing all tough teams but haven't been able to get over the top vs any.

Next out: Fundy, Tantramar, JMH, HVHS, Moncton

Another one 8 over 6. Woodstock takes down Leo Hayes.

All these upsets and so much parity. I'm going to need an NCAA FB type commitee to get these rankings out. Though we will put a little more weight on head to head and less on what conference you play in.

FHS defeats Lhhs 70-55 in a game that felt closer at times. Fhs has many assets and if they get it all going will be a hand full. Lions have some size and scrap for everything, lack of discipline continues to hurt.

PostSubject: Questionable   Wed Nov 26, 2014 8:19 am

Here are arguably the most inaccurate top 10 ever. Lots of parity and upsets in league games vs domination at tournaments is hurting any ability to have a clear picture. That's why we play the games. Hopefully the CG tourney this weekend can help bring some balance back to the force next week.

1. Fredericton - All they do is win win win no matter what. Can look great, can look sketchy but finding ways to win games matters too. Solid work from them thus far keeps them here.

2. Sussex - Not a lot of news lately just taking care of buisness in the league. Probably going to be top 2-3 all year so no problems with them here.

Every body else???

3. WHS - Battles FHS, Beats LHHS (who also looks tough against FHS) has done nothing to hurt themselves since the lions DEN. Young back court gets better, bigs look tough to guard and executing on offense.

4. BMHS - Might have done themselves the biggest favour of anyone on the list by just not being involved in a big game. Clearly a top 5-6 team in the province talent wise and always peak later. I'll settle with them here.

5. LHHS - How do you lose twice and move up? You lose to numbers 1-3 on the list in tough games in a week when everyone beat everyone. THey can defend tough and play physical. Can they take care of the ball and execute on offense when they need to?

6. KVHS - Wins over Rothesay and SJHS. Ugly or not you beat people you move up.

7. SJHS - Go figure. Look tough all week leading up to KVHS. RUnning getting up shots. THey love play a high possession game with lots of scoring options and see how many of 90+ shots they can make which most teams in NB don't have the fire power to handle. They have one of those days in a league game: can't make shots, don't have mojo, and can't get enough stops.

8. Riverview - Ya they lost their league game but a drop from 3 - 8 seems like enough for a 2 point loss on the road in a low scoring game. They've also beaten and competed well with teams that handled MVHS easily. Offensive inconsistency is going to be a problem.

9. MVHS - How do you win a league game vs a top 10, move up but stay behind the team you beat. I dunno ask Baylor. You did get a big home win, but it was by 2 at home in a game where neither team broke 50 against a team who's offensive punch I've questioned previously. Keep winning the commitee can't ignore you forever.

10. Rothesay - So you went winless at the Lions Den. Lost to KV. Did beat up SImonds and Hampton pretty well . . . hanging on only because no one outside the top 10 has faired any better vs top 10 opponents. Living on rep.

Well the CG tournament and its pools of death have helped somewhat. Here we go . ..

1. Fredericton - They did lose a 4 point war with one of the top two teams in NS. Format without cross overs kept them from advancing but handled SJHS and beat KV. Using their bench extensively in both games vs NB teams.

2. Sussex - Made it to Cross over to CG beating a weaker NS team and pulling away late vs BMHS. Lost to finalist CG. Solidly placed here no worries for now, anyone with an idea of when if/we get to see them play head to head with Fredericton.

3. BMHS - Seem to be getting better gave Sussex all they could handle for 3 quarters before they had to go deeper in their bench. Don't know the result of their consolation game.

4 KVHS - They seem to be playing much tougher brand of basketball this year and battling tough. Win over LHHS and grinding with Kitty in consolation play. This might be too high but all people have to do is beat them.

T.5 WHS - Apparently looked less competitive with some of the stronger teams, but AA bench depth is very different some of the best teams bench depth in NB and NS at tournaments like this.

T.5 SJHS - Had a solid outing at CG tournament beat LEO easily who is on a massive slide. Didn't look able to hang with Freddy. Seem very dependant on putting up big numbers on offense to win games. Lots of time to improve but win over BMHS first night of the year is only big win they've got to go on resume right now other then LHHS win.

7. Riverview - Probably too low but if I'm being fair they aren't even first in their league right now and they went undefeated at a tournament with none of these teams in attendance.

8. LHHS - Looking good in losses one week and then losing more games this weekend just means your on a losing streak. Lots of time to right the ship but welcome to slumpville population Lions.

9. MVHS - Didn't do much that I've seen or heard since win over Riverview at home. Couldn't drop LHHS past you since they beat you up the one time you played. Maybe your better then this. Hard to say?

10. Rothesay - I dunno. I don't ever see scores unless its from someone elses games or tournaments. They must be playing someone somewhere and no one off the list has done anything to get them on the list.

Post Gray and Hoop Classic rankings, not much movement at the top, but a bit of a shake up in the lower half.

1. Fredericton - still #1, loss to Citadel at the Gray is only loss so far this season and has no bearing on your top spot.

2. Sussex - Finishes 2nd at the Moncton Classic to undefeated NS team Horton. Loses to Riverview in opening game of tourney, but was not enough to bump them down a spot. Loses to Colonel Gray in semi final of the Gray Classic. hanging on to the 2 spot.....for now.

3. Bernice Macnaughton - Loses to Sussex in a close game in cross-over and defeates Riverview to finish in 3rd place at Hoop Classic. Tough gritty team with stong starting line up, but not a whole lot of play coming from their bench. Could hurt them if they get into foul trouble early. Needs to continue to work hard to keep this spot.

4. Riverview - Mixed results and struggling with consistancy. Wins CP Allen Tournament and looked good against Sussex in win at the Hoop Classic. Loss to BMHS in 3rd place Hoop game keeps them in the 4th spot. Need to see something at the Cotter to keep you here.

5. Kennebecasis - Recent wins over Leo, SJHS and Rothesay bumps them up the list. Momentum growing, stay tuned.

6. Saint John - Lots of hype at the start of season but not much to go on except loss to KV which does more harm than good so a little drop for the port city team right now.

7-t. Miramichi - Win over Riverview in league play helps them up the list a bit, but will have to prove themselves at the Cotter in Freddy to prove to be the real thing and not just a flash in the pan.

7-t. Woodstock - Playing more games and in more AAA tournaments than Fundy is, so tougher games. Can't find the result of the BMHS/Woodstock game from the Gray anywhere, so I'm making the assumption that Woodstock lost, if im wrong bump yourself up a couple spots.

9. Leo Hayes - Had high hopes for the lion early in the season, but loses are loses and a recent win by only 4 points to an eastern conference AA team does nothing to help your slide. Need to get a good win somewhere and shake off the slump. Just need to get that breakout game and get some momentum. Hopefully the Cotter Classic is your launching pad.

10-t. Rothesay - Expected wins in league games keeps you on my list, but got to play tougher teams to move.

10-t. Fundy - Wins the Danielle Park tournament in GM, but needs a win over any team on the list to move up. You fell only because the teams a head are playing and competing in stronger contests.

PostSubject: AAA Rankings   Tue Dec 09, 2014 7:14 am

FHS looks to be dominant again this year. Undefeated in NB so far and have played anyone worth playing, and some not.

Sussex and BMHS may be contenders. Naysayers have been corrected so far as FHS has managed to handle easily any supposed challengers such as SJHS, KV, LHHS, etc

They appear deeper than we thought, as they roll whole bench most games and don't appear worse for wear. Plenty of weapons and clearly the best backcourt in the province with Dow and Soffee.

Fredericton hosting the Cotter Classic up in Freddy this weekend, could be a perfect time to see who the true top teams are and update the rankings. So far its FHS, Sussex, BMHS in the top 3...and the rest are a very distant bottom 7 in my opinion.

Guessing everyone agrees FHS is number 1.They have the best depth by far. Riverview while inconsistent has beaten both BMHS and Sussex this year so hard to put them leaps and bounds past Sussex and BMHS. They are in the mix with those two teams right now. Saying FHS has clearly the best backcourt, I agree they have a good one but I would say a case could be made for Sussex having the best back court with Baird and Baxendale.

1. Fredericton High School - No losses to NB teams yet. Finding ways to win and getting deeper and better as year moves on.

2. Sussex - Seem to struggle in games that are a grind but if they can open the game up have greater success. Still a strong 2 but some others now proving they can play with them.

3. BMHS - Proving they are for real. Getting tougher as we go. Only bad loss on resume is 1 pointer to open season to SJHS.

4. Riverview - Inconsistent. Can play with and defend anyone on this list but needs to score consistently and execute everynight. Bad loss to MVHS in their league still hurts ranking overall.

5. KVHS - Able to play with teams and getting quality wins. Need to show they can put points on the board if they want to take down some of these top teams when it counts.

6. SJHS - Seems about right for. Now lots of fire power but can't seem to win ugly ones. BMHS W early is only big time win on resume.

7. Woodstock - Playing tough competition and seem to be better then everyone else below them. Not sure who ahead of them they would beat. Seem a little erratic in some big losses that are closer other nights and got everything they could handle from John Caldwell the other night.

8. LHHS - Need to get everyone rowing in the same direction. Lots of losses, taking a lot of criticism for being undisicplined. (I would like to take this time to point out when guys teams do similar things they are physical or edgy, even carry it around like a badge of honor .. .cough cough Dirty Birds - When it happens in female hoops there seems to be real indignation about it. I feel like there was a scene in Love and Basketball about this .. . .rambling) Haven't looked good lately, look better.

9. MVHS - This isn't the NCAA CFB committee so head to head is counting for more now then later. Still sitting behing LHHS because of early loss.

10. Rothesay - Still waiting on someone else to beat someone of consequence so we can have a change here.

Rcotter Classic wrapped up day 3 and you did not have to watch much wbb to predict that Fhs and Col. Grey would match up in final, 1pm Sunday at Fhs should be good match, both teams have size and talent, well prepared. Other teams not ready, actually some of it was down right painful to watch. Makes you wonder about wbb in Nb, basic skills not evident. Leo Hayes continue to battle vs Fhs, lost by 10 but can't seem to get up for others losing to Miramichi. KV still a mystery playing without couple key players Dodsworth and Jensen. They may surprise once everyone gets well. The wbb side of this tournament needs to ratchet up the quality of teams, better competition needed. Good luck ranking from this outing. If Col Grey was part of Nbiaa they would rank near top, their tournament becoming the one to attend. Would have been stronger field with Sussex.

1. Fredericton High School - No losses to NB teams yet. Thats easy.

2. Sussex - Locked in at number 2 until they or someone else can take down the Kitty.

3. BMHS - LIttle heard about this weekend. Seem like a solid pick here.

4. KVHS - Evident lack of depth. Grinding but this may be too high too soon.

5. Riverview - Loss to KVHS @ Cotter. Mixing it up defensively but still need to put the ball through the hoop.

6. SJHS - Big win vs WHS solidifies them. CHance to play KVHS and 2nd time could keep them moving up.

7. Woodstock - Playing tough competition and still better then teams below them. Battled vs SJHS.

8. MVHS - Moving on up! Solid showing this past weekend. Got a W vs LHHS.

9. LHHS - Getting ugly. Playing tough in a rivlary game is easy. Need to get up and play vs someone else. All they want for xmas is a W.

10. Rothesay - Finally saw some scores handled buisness in Tantramar fairly easily. Not enough to move them up but at least proving that someone from off the list needs to come take their spot away.

Next 5: James M Hill, Fundy, John Caldwell, Tantramar, HVHS
