Me thinks coach Djr is going to need to make an adjustment in his rankings.

9. LHHS - Getting ugly. Playing tough in a rivlary game is easy. Need to get up and play vs someone else. All they want for xmas is a W.

I see you post tons about things that the Leo Hayes Lions need to do, I don't see how they can win while sitting back in a zone all game and running their entire team out there every single night. I understand that they need to build some depth and to do that bench players need playing time but at what point do you let the core start playing heavy minutes together to gain some confidence in each other. It has to be frustrating after losing to Saint John High who in my opinion is not as talented.

Just an outsider looking in. The Lions team is far too talented to be losing to lesser teams, ohhh well.

Little reality check Force Left. Leo Hayes has lost to Saint John High by 28 and 5. Saint John High has also defeated MacNaughton by 8 (it was not a 1 point game as some people reported on here), and downed Woodstock. Not sure who Leo Hayes has beat in the top 10 recently? Thus coach DJR wishes them a W for Christmas.

Both teams ran 10 girls of the bench. Saint John High does it because they have 10 athletes that can up and down the floor fast. Leo Hayes does it so they have enough fouls to make sure the kids make it to the end on the game without fouling out.

Shorten the bench and play against a team that rolls 10 girls of the bench and presses you all game and see how you make out down the stretch in the fourth quarter. Seen a team try that against that with SJHS with a short bench. They led by 10 at half and lost the second half by 30 because the troops were exhausted.

Mr. Daley does an incredible job with that group of girls. His strategy last night was to try to keep the troops fresh against a deep team so they had legs to make a late rally and win. They almost did it.

Leo Hayes has challenges playing up tempo basketball. They are good at grinding. Multiple times last night they were down 12-14 and ground their way back in the game. At no point did the game feel like it was Leo Hayes to win. It was always Saint John high turning over the ball on unforced errors that let Leo Hayes create a small rally and make the game close.

There is no doubt in my mind if Leo Hayes gets the 3 ball dropping and they find two refs who let a good hard physical game of basketball be played (good luck with that in NB) that they can beat anyone in the province. Leo Hayes is actually better tooled to handle Fredericton High since they have multiple girls that can bang with Eva on the inside.

That being said I also know that if the three ball drops for Saint John and they play to their potential , they have the same upside. SJHS just beat Leo Hayes and Woodstock and had 5 girls score double digits in both games. It is a balanced attack . They however lack enough depth and toughness on the inside to handle Fredericton High.

PostSubject: Re: 2015 Girls Top 10   Mon Dec 22, 2014 10:06 pm

My Christmas break and Mid season rankings.

I started out the year with the following rankings
1.   Freddy
2-T. BMHS
2-T. Leo
4.   Sussex
5.   Riverview
6.   Saint John
7.   KVHS
8.   MVHS
9.   Rothesay
10.  Woodstock

1. Fredericton - Still unbeaten by NB teams, but gap isn't that big that some teams can't catch them. One of the strongest front courts in NB and tallented back court with good reserves to come off the bench. Also quality coaching and team chemistry a big part of their success. Always tough to hold the #1 spot but if anyone can this team has proven it.

2. KVHS - They just keep winning, knocking off opponents one by one. Rothesay, Saint John, MVHS, Riverview, Leo Hayes and Sussex. They're playing in quality tournaments and getting good games, also #1 in their Southwest division. Placed 3rd in Cotter Classic.

3-T Sussex - A bit of a bump losing to Riverview and KV recently so nudged out out of my #2 spot for now. Tournament win in Miramichi, and 2nd place finish at the Hoop Classic in Moncton. Strong back court and balanced front court. Girls adapting well to coaching change.

3-T Riverview - Fast, gritty and tough defensively. Tough front court tandem to go along with a good interchangable backcourt. Deep energetic and enthusiastic bench that helps keep momentum up. Coaching duo of MacKenzie and Fox combines energy and experience for team. Playing lots of games against good quality teams that just helps them get better. Tournament win in Halifax and 2nd place finish at Lions Den Tourney. Inconsistancy is the biggest problem they need to overcome in the second part of the season.

5. Bernice MacNaughton - Not much from the Highlanders since their 3rd place Hoops Classic finish. Getting a few good quality games so far but not really enough to help them in the long run. Starting line up is solid and coaching is there. Team will need to go deeper into the bench in order to make the push for Harbour Station though. They haven't played Freddy or Kv yet. They also haven't beaten Sussex and just split games with Riverview so they stay at the 5 spot....for now.

6. SJHS - Playing good teams (Freddy,KVHS,BMHS,Citadel and Sussex) and no surprises in league play. Placed 2nd in Miramichi tourney. Win vs. BMHS was their biggest (but only) coup so far this season and no other. Maybe should be ranked a bit higher but here for now.

7-T. MVHS - Not a whole lot of height for this team but they make up for it being a speedy team that like to pressure. Not the finish they should have had at their tournament and did pretty much what they were supposed to do at the Cotter. Only real big win was over Riverview by 2 a few weeks ago.

7-T. Woodstock - Played in some tough tournaments (Leo and Gray) and got some quality games, but only wins against top 10 teams was against Leo Hayes so far. The Thunder are still the top of the AA crop.

9. Rothesay - Even though near the bottom of the top 10, still better than most AAA and AA high school teams in NB. Wins the Tantramar tournament, but other than that just doing a great job staying off the radar.

10. Leo Hayes - I still have a lot of hope for the Lions. Continuing to develop a full team. Playing at most of the top tourneys so far (Lion's den, Gray and Cotter). Played the best team in NB more times than any other team on this list or in the province. Tough and physical team. But until you get a win you own the basement of the top 10.

Teams on the edge of breaking the top ten : Fundy, Tantramar, Harbour View and JMH.

1 - Fredericton: Someone in NB needs to beat them before we can talk about anything else.

2 - KVHS: Haven't gotten enough love. Young players are contributing. Getting big wins when it matters, grinding the rest of the way. Comfortable with they hanging their stocking as number 2.\\

3 - Sussex: Shocked by KV score. Not saying Sussex in unbeatable but 20 seems a ridiculous margin for a really team to lose by in league game that matters.

4 - BMHS: Solid and a team/staff that takes the long view of the season. Losses only happen to tough opponents.

5 - Riverview: Inconsistency is baffling. Liked how they were defending and playing with energy early in the year when playing m2m. Still gritty and tough but need to get consistent.

6 - SJHS - No reason to put them higher and it could be tough if KV and Sussex stay above them in the south. LHHS hasn't looked like world beaters but that's a tough regional game in Feb for a 1 and done.\

7 - Woodstock - Seem like the team to beat in AA. Playing tough schedule with lots of young kids. Getting carried by veteran leadership and interior play. Need to beat someone ahead of them to move up this list though.\

8 - MVHS - Doing lots of good things. Young, tough getting better every night out. Making the NE much more interesting.

9 - LHHS - Have beaten teams on this list, all be it a while ago but that keeps them here.

10 - Rothesay - No reason to drop them, no reason to move them up.

On the outside looking in: JMH, Fundy, JCS, Tantramar, HVHS

Last top 10 of 2014

1) Fredericton - Kitty holds form against all NB teams. Have yet to see them head to head with Sussex but they've taken down the best of the rest over and over. Once again they've put themselves in position to have the target on their back on the rest of the way.

2) KVHS - Underestimated most of the way. Have gotten better and younger players are stepping up. Constant improvement and taking control of the South in league play keep them here heading into the new year. Big wins late in Dec vs Sussex and BMHS. NOt sure they are the best matchup to take down Freddy but for now a solid #2.

3) Sussex - Definitely not as impressive throughout as early results would have indicated. All sorts of talent, time to see how youth grows and embraces the challenge of living up to expectations. Not unbeatable but maybe most upside for growth in the top 5.

4) BMHS - PLays tough competition and improves all year long. Hung around last year but thats last year. As 2015 rings in they must prove again they can peak and perform at a high level when its all on the line.

5) Riverview - Maybe better than this. Tough defensively but just to inconsistent. Need some more big wins vs top teams on a regular basis.

6) Saint John - Have showed the improvement most projected but may not have lived up to the league expectations of challenging for first. Right now sitting at 3rd with some work to do to avoid LHHS in the regional crossover.

7) Miramichi Valley - Keep grinding their way up the list. Wins over Riverview early and LHHS and WHS recently move them to a 7 heading into the new year. Will need to show out in remaining league play to move up further.

Cool WHS - Taking care of business outside the top 10 pretty easily. Need to show ability to win the games over teams ahead of them to move up at this point.

9) LHHS - Hopefully can right the ship in the new year. At this point are a tough out, but need to beat people.

10) Rothesay - No other team with enough work to place here. Still hanging on with some chances to climb in the new year.

Looking in: Fundy, John Caldwell, Harbourview, Carleton North, James M Hill

Great forum, always interesting, bound to be some good matches coming out of next invitationals, Dairy Town ( isn't it about time that Sussex and Fhs made up, great tournament but without best girls teams every year it lacks punch), Riverboat (should eventually honour Peter Corby who started this one) and finally the show at Harbour Station, always worth the drive, hopefully other venues will get a shot at hosting in near future. That's all For 2014, Happy New Year, play well.

PostSubject: Jan 6. Top 10   Tue Jan 06, 2015 8:16 am

1. Fredericton - Still the Kitty. Teams seem to be closing the gap a little. I'm not in the gyms though so what tactics, and players both teams are using in those games I can't say. Fredericton has been going deeper then I assume they will go at playoff time in most of their games so far. They also have been dabling with all sorts of offensive and defensive tactics. Not sure what the playoff Kats will look like and how much it will resemble the exh Kats we've been seeing.

2. KVHS - Continue to prove they are real. Youngsters not playing like youngsters, gritty play from returning players. Making life tough at both ends for everyone. Closest anyone has come to Freddy from NB team all year.

3. Riverview - Big wins over Sussex and BMHS. Seem to be finding ways to win at the right time. Offense might still be an issue but defending well enough to be in games and then find ways to win them.

4. Sussex - Have moved back from clear #2 early in the season to being in a group of teams. THey also keep losing to teams that we might have believed they should beat early. Sometimes by a little sometimes by a lot.

5. BMHS - About as expected. Young team learning to compete and win. Hitting some bumps along the way but we'll see where they are at in February.

6. MVHS - Impressive climb so far this year. Wins over Riverview, WHS, SJHS, LHHS all on resume now. Tough out no matter who they play.

7. SJHS - Want to put points on the board. In close lower scoring grind em out games seem to come out on the short end. IF they can get the game into the 70's they seem to have a lot more success. Need to show out vs Sussex and KV in league play to start climbing again.

8. WHS - Still clearly top AA team. Tough AAA exh and tourney schedule keeps them here though haven't beaten anyone above them in a while.

9. LHHS - Tough out at the DTC. But again being a tough out is different then winning. Probably the team that no one is looking forawrd to play in playoffs because you should beat them, but they always hang around and the game is going to be way more physical then most teams want. All the pressure and risk on the other team at this point. Has this been the plan all along?

10. Rothesay - Riverboat this weekend and league games this month should finally give us a reall test for where this group is at.

Next 5: Fundy, HVHS, JCS, CNHS, JMH

PostSubject: FHS GIRLS DOMINATE AAA   Sun Jan 11, 2015 3:50 pm

Yesterday it looked like CoachDJR was right with "TEAMS CLOSING THE GAP" against the KITTY squad as Sussex came out with an early 18-2 run and went on to beat the Kats [59-56] in their first loss of the year to an NB team.

However Lady Kats decided to solidify their #1 Ranking by putting a beat down on KVHS [60-38] in crossover and then in the rematch, for the RiverBoat Title, turned the tables on Sussex by smacking them 68-51 to ensure they get the respect they deserve. No team is more consistent than the Lady Kats.

PostSubject: Kitty Kats Tame Highlanders   Wed Jan 14, 2015 7:33 am

The BMHS Highlanders landed in the FHS Main Gym last night in an effort to tame the Kitty Kats...unfortunately for the "gaggle of green" they were summarily dismissed by the resilient Kats who are clearly demonstrating they belong, and will remain, at the top of the Pride in the province.

Bernice led all game, Karly Buckingham had about 20 points, and it looked as if FHS were going to suffer a loss at home [unheard of I know]. However, the Kats tied it up in the third and dominated the fourth to go up by 12. Grace Simpson led everyone with about 25, Eva Tumwine was right behind her. Kats held on for a 75-69 win. More great news for the program is that Coach K [that'd be Kevin Daley] manages to roll his bench all game...even in barn burners. The experience and floor time minutes that these grade 9, 10 and 11 kids are getting will serve this program well for years to come.

see you at Harbour!!!

PostSubject: Jan 15 Top Ten   Thu Jan 15, 2015 9:05 am

Dairy Town, RiverBoat, League games .. . haven't given as much seperation moving into exam week. If anything have muddied the waters. Just in time for exam week to stew over while we wait your Jan 15th top 10.

1. Fredericton - Still the Kitty, but not by as much. KV, BMHS have both shown that they can close the gap but have also gotten handled easily over stretches. Sussex took them down one day then got locked down the next. Length and size make them tough to beat when they are focused and defending well. While 4-5 teams might push them come playoff time we do need to remember they haven't shortened their bench all year. Still 1 but have looked beatable of late.

2. Sussex - While inconsistent I'll give them the nod as they are the only team to beat Freddy in NB. Need to consistently play with energy and get offense that is not dependant on transition and banging shots in bunches. 2-5 might be interchangeable at this point but we'll be Sussex here.

3. Riverview - Wins over Sussex and BMHS both look good. Need to show that they are an everynight sort of team. Still trying to win on defense, need to get s scoring threat that teams focus on.

4. KVHS - 2 weeks ago looked ready to dominate the south and go toe to toe with Freddy for #1. Then get blown up by Freddy in their own tournament. Young kids sometimes looks young. Evident that while tough and competitive KV still needs a certain kind of game to be played.

5. BMHS- Tournament wins in NS and a decent showing vs Freddy. Young team that seems streaky but still has a month to get it all together. League loss to Riverview and not present in some of these big tourneys to measure keep them here. THey are probably not this low, but 2-5 is an any given night sort of deal.

6. MVHS - Quiet since school has come back but wins over WHS x2, LHHS, Riverview and SJHS on their resume give them some quiet time here to see if they can move up.

7. SJHS -  Tough in a league game vs Sussex but still  a loss. Tough in game vs MVHS but lost. Wins over WHS keep them here, but for a young improving team its time to beat someone.

8. LHHS - Climbing the ladder again. Could have maybe bumped them up higher then this but we'll take this slow. Looked much tougher in games at DTC and Riverboat.

9. WHS - Seem to be in a funk. Not playing top teams as tough. Lost to MVHS by 2 then by 19 a few days later. Took overtime to beat Rothesay at Dairy Town. Dog Days of Jan. Hopefully can get back to form with something bigger to play for in a couple of weeks.

10. Fundy - We just needed someone from off the list to beat someone on to get some recoginition.  Lots of skilled kids that play hard and are putting it together. Played MVHS and Freddy tough alread this year, but a convincing league win over beat up Rothesay team gets us our first shake up of the year.

Next 5: Rothesay, HVHS, JMH, JCS, TRHS

Looks as though DJRs rankings have to change. WHS trounced Leo Ladies last night I heard. How were the lions ever ahead of whs in the rankings? Did they ever beat them this year?

Haven't seen that score yet but definitely. Pretty sure LHHS just beat WHS at the RIverboat that got them moved back above them in the first place.

Any big games or tournaments coming up before regionals or are we pretty much set moving in?

AAA girls - I know Fitz game is this weekend and Freddy has their league game with LHHS to go as well. Woodstock in Freddy next week too.

NE must have some key league games left too or scores have not been reported.

AA - a couple of league games left in South and West to finalize seeding going into regionals. Think the NE is pretty much locked in maybe some games left to confirm the 4 seed.

A - JCS seems to have control over west followed by hartland. Probably some good games left in the S too working on 2-4 but Harvey seems in control there. Not sure about N&E Caledonia then . . .

Are any big tournaments left? Thought Riverview might have 1 end of January. JCS will ahve their 30-31 see them vs Cal maybe and some AA teams from SW matchup prior to regionals? Anything else on the radar?

Riverview will host BMHS next week and BMHS will host MVHS on Feb 4th in key league games.

Moncton high will have the 4 seed in the east while BMHS, Riverview and Miramichi battle for the 1st seed.

Riverview is also hosting a late season tournament next weekend with Kennebecasis, Woodstock, Miramichi and 2 NS teams (CEC and Sir John A MacDonald) attending.

A girls - John Caldwell should have a lock on the west.  I believe that Canterbury and Hartland play on Tuesday night with second place on the line?  Canterbury has a win over Hartland already in league play, so point differential would be important if Hartland were to win.  In the south I think Harvey has wrapped up the league.  RNS and Grand Manan are in a situation similar to Hartland and Canterbury, playing next week for second place. RNS has a narrow victory over Grand Manan in their first league game and I think they have both lost only to Harvey.  I am not sure if anything in the NE is officially set yet, but it should be Caledonia followed by Petti, and then I think Stanley currently has the edge on Dalhousie for third.
