PostSubject: Midget vs JV    Thu Jan 22, 2015 9:24 am

JV basketball in NB seems to be in decline with the exception of the traditional powerhouse schools that have the student population that can absorbe losing critical players to varsity. Would it be better for basketball in NB to run a full season midget program with Atlantic Championships for the winners (same as U13 and U14) or continue with the same JV system? Are there any other ideas/solutions to the problem?

What would be neat is if BNB had regional midget teams. Coaches apply to coach these teams. BNB can monitor teams and evaluate players and coaches within this program. The rest of the kids could play jv.

I like that idea. I sometimes feel like the only reason club basketball hasn't yet taken over all middle school and high school sports entirely is infrastruture. ie. THe schools still control the gymnasiums in most communities (very few YMCA's, or private facilties running teams and programs) so particularly in rural communities it would be the lack of gymnasium or cost to rent/run the program outside of the school that would stop it from happening. Don't get me wrong I love high school sport and the values it deals with, however most of the support, development and involvement in basketball as its own community now comes from outside of schools (Community coaches, minor associations, etc) the largest link is the facilities.

Obviously regions and areas would have to work out scheduling conflicts between midget and varsity but as a varsity coach I would rather have marginal or young players playing/practicing with me and getting extra time on 2nd team. Much like JV in the states where there isn't a competitive league they just play games so non varsity and varsity bench players can compete vs others teams in the same situation.

So if the JV numbers are already declining, how do you propose that works?

Maybe just have an exhibition team kids grade nine to 12. Or just can jv and everyone in the province play straight midget. Most of if not all jv coaches could just coach midget and they would have an easier time making a schedule to fit their teams needs. Also kids from smaller communities who do not make a varsity team in grade nine or ten could go play on another midget team which is currently not an option.
