Sussex, agree, they are best in nb
Riverview, had good rc classic even missing couple of starters
Fredericton, suspect, youth rears its ugly head along with lack of size
Kv, missing key starter at classic plus their guard play is suspect
Leo, bit early to get excited
Bmhs, I'm sticking with the coaching as I have llast two years, they'll be top 3
Rest are outside the bubble until they actually win vs top dogs, there actually is only a top six but doesn't have same ring as ten!

Happy Hoopidays. Pre Christmas Power Rankings

1. Sussex - No reason to move them from here. Hope the holidays get them healthy for the final push.

2. Riverview - Finding a way to find away. Short bench, short handed. Grinding out wins each time out. Hope their stocking finds them the numbers and time to build in some person to person defense to compliment the zone they've been building to support their depth issues.

3. Fredericton - Avenges loss on home court at RC by beating LHHS again. Other than one blip have managed to win the matchups vs the Lions. Not sure they are playing with a wide enough margin of error to win consistently yet but young Kats are stepping up. Santa needs to bring them some consistent scoring cause sometimes the committee is too indecisive.

4. KVHS - Big win over BMHS in Moncton. Re-affirms that with their roster in tact they are right there with the top dawgs. Stocking full of tape and advil because when everyone is going they are tough but missing a couple of key bodies drops them in a hurry.

5. LHHS - Quick rise, quick fall. Need to show that RC is the norm and not the anomaly. Have size and grit to cause problems to some of these smaller fast teams. Hope the elves pack some stickem to limit turnovers and keep the game 5 on 5 for them.

6. MVHS - Big league win vs BMHS, bumps the Pulamoo back up. Santa better bring some tupperware and thermoses to keep the home cooking warm and fresh when it goes on the road. Tough defensively and with some streaky shooting this team needs to consistently win on the road to prove its ready for the next level.

7. BMHS - If this year is an extension of the playing possum theme from previous year's to crank it up for a playoff push, then this team might be the best salespersons yet. That is a lot of kids who've been given every opportunity to develop struggling to put points on the board. Stockings full of scissors to cut the wrapping of the rims from here on out.

8. SJHS - Um. If Santa give them a mirror to help figure out who they are. Lose to teams they shouldn't, compete with best and thump top 10 teams, go on road and get waxed by Kitty. Who are u? Seem to be really dependent on having 2-3 key performers in line up and playing well. Looking forward to seeing who this team turns out to be in the New Year.

9. Woodstock - Solid performance vs Kitty and early win vs LHHS have them locked into the top 10. Still haven't lost to a AA team since coming back into the fold 2013. Close wins over CNHS and rough outing vs SJHS lets the number of young players on roster show through. Just make sure there is some polish and sand paper to work the rough spot out and shine them up so they are ready for February and another playoff run.

10. CNHS - Hanging right there with Woodstock everytime out. They keep refusing to go away but can't seem to win a game to get them higher. Santa is coming early and giving them some big opportunities at the Thunder Valley and the Potatoe Barrell to prove their metal.

Next 5: Fundy, Harbour View, JMH, St. Stephen, SVHS

Post Christmas - Pre New Years top 10.

Lots going on since last we spoke and still more with exhibition games this weekenda, the Dairy town nd the Potato Barell to shake things up. Getting dangerously close to needing a top 12 the way things are going this year.

1. Sussex - Still unbeaten vs NB competition. Enjoy your podium.

2. Riverview- Currently the best of the rest. Like a lot of top 10 teams a 1 - 2 key injuries or off days from a losing skid, but unlike most of the rest of the top 10 seem to find a way to win most of the ones they should.

3. Fredericton - Short handed loss to BMHS in Moncton isn't a great way to start the holiday but not a killer yet. Have a 20 point win in most recent contest with KV, a big win over SJHS while short handed, and closest anyone has come to Sussex. Here you stay.

4. KV - Solid performances got exposed at Cotter by what the loss of any key player does to their rotation. Everyone is back in action as far as we know so they could make a push to move back up the ladder.

From here down things get dicey at best:

5. BMHS - League loss on the road to MVHS isn't the worst thing in the world, but its not something anyone else in the top 5 would do at this point. You did protect home court against a short handed Kitty in convincing fashion.

6. Woodstock - Big jump. PLayed Kitty tough, avenged two recent losses to SJHS with a big win in the final. Always look good at home, but for now you can stay here.

7. SJHS - It was the best of times it was the worst of times. Depleted roster means that you play with the kid who show up every night. Luckily the kids are pretty good so when they get on the same page can be pretty tough, team that hands with the top 4 and thumps woody. Also team that wins games that should be closer then they are vs teams outside the top 10. Team that loses games in their league to teams outside the top 10. When you are good you are very good, but when you are not . . . yeesh.

8. MVHS - Gritty defensive teams that is going to be a tough out for anyone they play. Need to find more consistent offense. Playing games in the 40's means that you are always in it but teams are always close enough to beat you. Big league win over BMHS looks good, as do gritty wins over Fundy, Leo Hayes and a big win over CNHS before falling to Woodstock at TVC.

9. Leo Hayes - Classic overreaction to what have you done for me lately. Looked tremendous at moments in the RCC, then had stretches of great at the TVC but ended up in too many close games and on the wrong side of the scores in them. Win over Freddy was nice but then got dumped the next time you played. Right there with CNHS, MVHS and Fundy but only got wins over 1.

10. Fundy - Been right on the edge all year. Finally got some games and win to validate moving here. Convincing weeked with solid win over CNHS to earn a split in season series, down to the wire with MVHS in loss and gritty 1 pt win vs LHHS. Looked bad in loss to SJHS but have played them tough on a couple of occaisions and have beaten HVHS numerous times who have 2 wins over SJHS. See how they top 10 is confusing . . .

1. Sussex - Still top. Couple of teams show the gap is close though and Jan and Feb. should be a lot of fun. Winners again of Riverboat though to keep firm hold on their top spot.

2. KV - Home and healthy get them too the final. Lost by more then Freddy does to Sussex but take down kitty in a close one during round robin. The list is getting very fluid.

3. FHS - Kitty losses show us as much as wins. Down to wire with top 2 and much more impressive in other than other teams present.

4. Leo - No one moves around quite like Lions do on this list. Seems to be a day in and day out sort of thing. Show that they are capable of beating anyone on the list except maybe the top three but also show ability to lose to anyone on the list. Playing with a small margin for error but here you go.

5. Riverview - Didn't look good this weekend in losses to Leo and Sussex nor in Win vs Rothesay. Doesn't undermine all the good things they've done this year and definitely a top team but not on their A game at all.

6. Bernice - Maybe too high but at this point almost everyone in the top 10 has won or lost games to similar opponents or like scores. Will not drop them further until teams below show more consistency in results vs top.

7. Woodstock - Quiet weekend but 2 quality tournament wins in 1 week over xmas break still solidify their place.

8. MVHS - COmpeting with everyone but not consistently beating anyone away from home yet. Great energy and effort but still only getting close, need to get over the top on regular basis.

9. SJHS - Probably too low but limited wiggle room at this point in the year. Can play with and maybe even beat just about anyone on the list, but inconsistency and erratic play/scores keep htem toward the bottom of the list. Strong work this month will be needed to improve playoff prospects. If anyone on the list can cause some movement and noise its SJHS but need to have a great end of season push to be around at the end.

10. Fundy - TVC performance showed reason to be here. Followed up with a 1 possession loss to LHHS in Fredericton. Then went to PEI and won COnfederation Classic going 4-0 including a 15 pt win at the expense of Colonel Gray who finished 2nd at DTC. Need to be good everytime out though not in flashes.

Top 10 is wide open with less weeks to play then we have played already.

Post Christmas ranking from the East. Now that a few key games and big tournaments have been played out it gives a bit better view of the overall field.

1) Sussex (EVEN) -- No movement here. Wins the Riverboat with wins over a struggling Riverview squad, a surging Lions team and host KV squad. Doing what needs to be done against NB teams and Playing tough out of province teams. Finishes 3rd in home tournament but still bettered any NB teams attending. Still lots of BBall left in the season and it's the league games that really count from here on in.

2) Kennebecasis (UP 2) -- 2nd place finish at Riverboat. Reset and recharged ready for the 2nd half of the season. League game vs. Sussex in Feb is the big key, good to finish first best to finish #1 in your league.

3) Fredericton (EVEN) -- 3rd at Riverboat and representing better than the lower part of the list.

4) Leo Hays (UP 1) -- Big win over Riverview gives you another boost, now have to beat one of the top 3 to move you any further.

5) Riverview (Down 3) -- Still the top team in the East by defeating BMHS in an important league game. Tough part now is to go to the Chi and get the win and into the Highlanders home and get that win as well. Flat out of the gate in 2016 losing way more than winning. Losses to Sussex (X3) isn't what knock's you down, its the loss to Leo and the close 4 point win over a team that hasn't even made the top ten this season. Still time left to regroup.

6) Woodstock (UP 3) -- Biggest jump on the list. The best AA team no doubt and better than anyone else below by claiming the Potato Barrel and Thunder Classic tournaments. Playing the right games and in the right tournaments and getting the right wins. Harbour Station bound.

7) MacNaughton (DOWN 1) -- Loses to Riverview and Miramichi in league play bump you down a notch . Only recent notable win was to Fredericton and that was back in late December. This is a late spiking team, so look for a turn around and jump in the rankings in coming weeks. they have home court advantage for important league games and will quietly play other good games out of site of potential playoff rivals to get better. Slow and steady wins the race.

8)Miramichi Valley (DOWN 1) -- A feisty eastern team but just doesn't do well against western teams. Loses ground because of another surging team on the list. Loss to Woodstock in semi final Thunder Classic and winless at Dairytown doesn't do anything for your rank. Home court advantage against Riverview is a plus and still have a chance to get another win with BMHS. Wins these games and a that will propel you up for sure.

9) Saint John (DOWN 1) -- 2nd place finish at the Thunder Classic was good but not nearly what you need to jump in the rankings. Tough division to be in to get to playoffs.

10) Fundy (EVEN) -- Defeats Colonel Gray and goes on to win Confederation Classic??? Wow didn't see that coming. You should be higher up but need to get some wins over other teams on this list first. Probably be you and Woodstock at Harbour Station.

On the cusp -- Carleton North, Rothesay, South Victoria, Harbourview,

Saint John High downs KV 54-52 with a buzzer beater for the victory.

It is a shame a team as bad as Oromocto get to be in the playoffs this year and a quality team in the South is going to sit on the sidelines!!

I wouldn't put Sussex in this question yet, and before this past week I might have excluded a couple of other teams. How close are we on the girls side this year from having that majority of top teams (in this case the top 10) being an any given night situation.

While I don't feel like there are teams that should lose to others on the list I think we've seen this season at various points 5-10 are interchangeable. Are we at a point where we can say 3-10 or 2-9 . . . the majority of the top 10 is in a situation of whoever is healthy and has a good night. Should make for a wild February.

2nd question of the day.

Would we be better served going back to a ranking to model of 1-8 (or ranking everyone) vs geographical conference models for the sake of competitive balance and accuracy.

In the AAA girls there is probably closer share of the pie with 3 of what I would percieve as the top 8 girls teams in the province being the the North East with 5 being in the south west.

In AA girls the division is 6 of top 8 in SW and 2 of top 8 in NE.

In A girls I am not as familiar but I think you could make a similar statement with at least the majority of the top 8 being in the SW.

The playoff structure Is deeply flawed. Teams should not be rewarded with a playoff berth because they got of bed in the morning. If playoff games have a 40 to 50 point beat down it is essentially a bye. Teams on the other side of the draw are playing their best players big minutes trying to survive. In AAA girls the South and West beat the crap out of each other one weekend while the Northeast teams sit home and rest.

Earning a bye should come as a result of high seeding, not based on a geographical nuance of how many teams are in your league.

Top Seeds (#1) in each conference get a bye at regionals (used to be the 1 vs 4 game) now no 4's.

Issue that Souwest is bringing up, I believe, is the fact that teams in the NE AAA girls play an interlocked schedule so their standings seed 1-4 which advance to sectionals with no regional. Whereas the in the girls SW: the western teams all get to go to regionals (despite Oromocto being very weak), while the southern teams this year have 4 teams that could be competitive at that tournament but only 3 teams are going to go. Then the top three teams in the south and west will all compete vs each other all weekend in another playoff round that the NE schools do not have to play or risk.

Well then those south teams need to finish top 3. There are always scenarios where it does not make sense to some teams. This is a lot better than wasting time on that 1 vs 4 massacre.

Baller, if the playoff structure let the best 8 girls AAA teams make the playoffs this year, there would not be any blowouts. All games would be competitive. Sussex is really the only team that seems ahead of the pack . Instead the current playoff structure lets lousy teams make the playoffs because they just happen to play in the right region.

To help you understand Baller , here is roughly the AAA Girls Draw this year.

Southwest regional

Game 1 - KV (2 South) versus Oromocto (3 west) - Oromocto gets in because they got out of bed. This is essentially a bye for KV. Starters will not need to play any minutes.
Game 2 - Leo Hayes (2 West ) vs either Saint John High or Harbourview (3 South) - This game will be a dogfight -- whoever wins this will be bruised and battered
Game 3 - Fredericton High versus winner of Game 1 which will be KV. (Fredericton high in theory has a bye, but KV will win in a cakewalk so both teams will be fresh and Fredericton loses advantage of bye because the current league structure lets crappy teams make the playoffs)
Game 4 - Sussex vs winner of Game 2. Game 2 will be a fight to the death and none of these teams will have the gas to battle Sussex two hours later so Sussex wins (i.e. the bye for Sussex works the way it should since the team it faces has to play a tough game before hand)
Game 5 - Loser of Game 3 vs Loser of Game 4 (teams will be working hard to lose this one so they can avoid Sussex and get over to the easier side of the province - this "special feature" of the playoff structure has been discussed many times on this forum...Teams trying to lose the 3-4 seed game to get over to the weaker side of the province)
Game 6 Sussex vs winner of Fredericton and KV. (most likely Sussex based on season results)

So while these teams are beating the crap out of each other, all the teams in the Northeast get to rest this regional weekend because that side of the province has too few teams to have a regional (i.e. they earn a bye weekend without actually "earning" a bye weekend). MacNaughton practices their 1-3-1 zone all weekend instead of showing up and having to play some tough basketball games that could potentially bruise or batter their starters.

So fast forward to sectional weekend.

The winner of the Southwest regional gets a free pass in their first game. They get to match up against either Moncton or Trimble who get to weekend two because they play in the North east (i.e. they have a hearbeat and made the playoffs) . (Teams 1 through 4 in the South would blow out these two teams by 30-40 points). Team 1 from the Northeast league (all fresh from not playing the weekend before) plays team 4 from the South who is bruised and battered from playing three tough games the weekend before.

Two years ago MacNaughton won at Harbour Station over a bruised and battered KV team that simply ran out of gas in their playoff run. Last year Sussex played two weekend of tough playoff games before running out of gas at Harbour Station to MacNaughton.

Weather last week limited action so very little movement:

1. Sussex - Someone needs to take them down and at this point I don't see an opportunity for that to happen until we get into playoffs (if ever).

2. FHS - Gets the bump after a loss in league play suddenly puts KV in potential danger in the south as well. Kitty has played Sussex as tough as anyone in NB we'll see what the playoffs bring.

3. KV - Small drop after league loss. Probably not a huge deal but a 2nd one could create some chaos in the south that they want to be no part of.

4. Leo - Have looked great after xmas break. Need to stay consistent.

5. Riverview - Still taking care of buisness in the east but need to show us something after the Riverboat performance to start climbing again.

6. Bernice - This is a shaky hold on this spot as they could still legitimately drop to 3rd in the south. THis is the time of year when we often see them putting stuff together, will that be the case again.

7. Woodstock - Great performances over break but not much since. Still the front runner in AA. Don't know how many more opportunities they have to climb the list.

8. MVHS - Might be too high, might be too low. Big league push and solid performances in the playoffs give you chances to make big gains.

9. SJHS - Big win over KV but not enough for me to move you. Legitimate claim to being one of top girls teams in the province but still a real chance they are sitting at home come playoff time unless they can bottle some more magic against KV again.

10. Fundy - Win over LHHS is only win vs top 10. But COnfed City Classic wins lends credibility as do single possession losses to MVHS, SJHS and Leo. Also have double digit wins vs anyone else in contention to jump up the list or at least vs similar opponents.

For the record, Sussex got the virtual bye at sectionals last year getting to play Moncton high in their first round and it was a massacre, so their sectional games were considerably easier than what the eastern ones were.

Sussex had really just one tough game in the 2 weeks leading up to Harbour Station if you really break it down, that game was with the winner of the Riverview/Fredericton 1st round sectional battle(Which was probably the toughest game for both those teams all year). So was that fair? Not really, but that's the way things go. We move on and hope to fix it for the years to come.

If memory serves me correctly, BMHS got SJHS in their first game and KV got MVHS in the other sectional last year. So all games in the east were competitive, gritty and physical. Any team coming out of this regional deserved and earned the right to got to Harbour Station.

So in my personal opinion, Sussex if anything had the overall advantage going into Harbour Station over BMHS. Saying this, both teams in the final had a week to rest, both teams had full rosters and were healthy (with the exception of 1 BMHS starter who played regardless) so if a team in the final ran out of legs, it can't be blamed on a regional event that happened almost 14 days prior to the final.

Sussex just got outplayed at Harbour and it was BMHS' day in the sun, it was earned fair and square.

Two years ago, the turning point at Harbour was not so much injuries going into the final as it was the injury that occurred during the final in the 1st quarter to one of KV's starters and best players. That was major turning point in game that could have been won on good outside shooting which KV had over BMHS that year.

Moving forward, maybe by eliminating the regionals and have the western teams interlock may be the best way for the top 4 teams to be decided properly and fairly. The only drawback to that scenario is that the top teams may have to bow out of a tournament or two to keep within their NBIAA guideline game limit.

Thoughts?

Not a lot to talk about top 10 wise weekend before exams re: movement.

Some important league games sort out some teams. WHS and Fundy all but lock up the West and South top spots and byes at REgionals. Sussex locks themselves into 1st place barring a huge upset in the south. I think the same win eliminated SJHS from post season contention and now puts them in the Larry Brown SMU position of being banished from playoffs. Therefore putting me in the unfortunate position of having to decide if this an AP style pole (SMU can be ranked) or coaches pole (SMU cannot).

The real debate will start when playoffs start and Harbour View Plays LHHS. If they hang or win that game then that is their only real argument for being in the top 10 other than early season wins in league play vs SJHS. Who has beaten KV and taken Sussex to the wire in the last 2 weeks.

For now I will leave the standing exactly the same as last week with no real reason to move anyone. I guess the real lesson to AD's and coaches here is to try and make sure meaningful league games happen later in the year or are at least divided between before and after Christmas break to give teams a chance to adjust and adapt. Or the really real lesson is be able to win the games you need to. Or the really really real lesson is the NBIAA needs a format that doesn't make wins in November as or more meaningful than wins in February.

SHould give some consideration to moving Kitty but only team I would move up to 2 is KV who had loss to SJHS team last week too . . . so call it a wash?

Woodstock does have wins over SJHS, MVHS, LHHS, Kitty. vs. those 4 (4-6 now with 1 win vs each). All the teams in the top 10 have done a pretty good job of beating up on each other all year and those other teams have play each other a lot more often to see it over time. I can check my data but I don't think any of the wins vs those teams happened at a neutral site or on the road. WHS arguably one of the toughest home courts in NB.

SJHS and MVHS are lower then them in the standings and its tough to say with only losses to KV and Sussex and no games vs Eastern AAA teams. LHHS has won the last 3 meetings after losing at WHS early in the year. Kitty win is good win, we'll see in their game at LHHS and at Kitty in Feb if they are ready to take a big jump.

Very good points coach DJR. Remember though that Woodstock won the Thunder Valley Classic and Leo Hayes didn't even make crossovers??
