Anyone going to Fredericton? CIS, ACAA and exhibition high school (FHS and LHHS JV and varsity) games this weekend. There must be more games somewhere.

Most of that is part of the Mike Fitz Memorial game. The schedule is:

Noon - JV Girls
2pm - JV Boys
6pm - Varsity Boys
8pm - Varsity Girls

In case of inclement weather, the storm date will be Sunday, January 31.

As a special treat this year, The St. Thomas Varsity Men’s Basketball Team, will be home to the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, on the same day, at 4:00 pm in the Pit.

Watching the two worst teams in the ACAA play is not exactly a treat. Wonder how long that new STU coaching experiment will last.

I didn't write that, copied it from the Facebook Event page.

Feb 3. Updated Top 10 Power Rankings

1. Sussex - Still number 1 but not by a wide margin. One loss in a road conference game to a top 5 team where the result doesn't matter isn't enough to move you. But now have first loss to NB team makes the top 10 much more even as anyone may in fact be able to beat anyone on a given night.

2. KV - REbounded from tough loss to SJ a couple of weeks ago to which the 2nd match and post an impressive win over Sussex. I'm sure both squads feel like they are HS favorites at this point. 1 of a number of reasons the top 5 is looking more SW heavy these days.

3. Riverview - In control of the NE though it all comes down to a league game this weekend. Move up has more to do with some shaky play by teams who were ahead of you.

4. Kitty - KV redeems their questionable loss in league play with a strong showing in league play. Tough loss to WOodstock by Kitty is followed up by a war with LHHS. Just when the Kitty looked like they've solved the lions there they are again.

5. LHHS - Keeps playing better and tougher as year goes on. Can't move you ahead of Kitty until you get over the top consistently and still need you to prove you can beat the teams ahead of you to move up.

6. Woodstock - Has Woodstock lost in 2016 and seem to be peaking. Good win vs Kitty chance to climb over the next couple of weeks with road games vs LHHS and Kitty.

7. BMHS - As always is flying under the radar but a loss to MVHS takes them from a chance to host Sectionals. Road to HS looks to do through Riverview in the NE.

8. MVHS - Solidly seem locked into 3rd in the NE which means comes sectionals time they are getting 2 from the SW. 3 or 4 would be a challenge for them this may be as far as they go.

9. SJHS - I'll give you at least 1 more week here. You are legit when you are on, but inconsistency and poor timing were a season killer. Not sure if you'll survive here until the end of the year but you had a good run.

10. FUndy - Hosting SW regional. No one has done anything to move them out of this spot.

Next 5: HVHS, CNHS, Rothesay, SVHS, JMH

Storms make for light work the last week or so and teams missing out on practices/games to prep for Regionals weekend.

1. Sussex - Finishes 1 in the South. Hosting regionals. Have been proven to be beatable but still in control moving forward.

2. KV - While most of the list is an any given night. KV when healthy and rolling has proven they are a top contender. Depth is an issue but key players play well together and create problems a variety of ways inside and out that most teams don't have the option to do.

3. Riverview - Still holding this spot but more because of what you done earlier not lately. Haven't looked impressive down the stretch but did what it took to be hosting a sectional with some time to prepare.

4. BMHS - Don't look now. Big win over Rvierview this week and has wins under their belt vs almost everyone in the top 10. Don't count them out yet. 2 time defending champs start February off strong.

5. Kitty - More limping to the finish line than roaring into February. Need to get healthy and back to getting the pace of the game up. Not built to win grind em outs every night young kids need to run free and without pressure. They could end up anywhere on the list in a couple weeks.

6. LHHS - IMproving all year long. Need to make some noise at regionals to make a move.

7. WHS - Probably too low but too many split decisions along the way to show they are definitely better than these teams. Clearly the top team in AA right now.

8. MVHS - Tough road ahead. 3rd place at sectionals means a date with a team from the SW who is ranked above them. That is their chance to move on up.

9. SJHS - YOu aren't in the playoffs. You've beaten most of the team on this list at some point and lost to them. similar to Woody in terms of difficulty ranking because of inconsistent results.

10. Fundy - #1 team in South AA. Hosting regionals. Woodstock and CNHS on the way down to sort out some stuff in the South West.

Next 5: CNHS, HVHS, RHS, SVHS, JMH

Well that was some interesting stuff.

1. Sussex - After a bit of a scare on Friday night. Seem to right the ship in a hurry with some strong shooting on Sat. Hosting a sectional that may look like a war zone when we are done with Sussex,KV, and BMHS all there.

2. Fredericton - Kitty jumping back up the list. Don't think anyone expected a handling of KV the way they did on Friday. Injuries a concern moving forward but again still found ways to roll kids all weekend. Interesting sectional with 4 very balanced teams on the Eastern side.

3. Riverview - Hosting a Sectional but gets a LHHS that plays everyone tough and then Kitty or MVHS. Chance to show they are ready at sectionals hasn't been a great stretch.

4. BMHS - Strong weekend results against a strong Colonel Gray team. Another big February push under way. No cake walk though with KV out of the gate at sectionals.

5. KV - Quick drop but lost in convincing fashion to a team who's number they had seem to have had when they were helathy. Rebounded to get the W against LHHS. For lots of folks the 3 teams they expected to see at HS early in the season are all now at one sectional.

6. LHHS - Been everyone's dark horse for a couple of years and now have shown they can play anyone down to the wire. SHould be a grind em out low scoring affair in their sectional game vs Riverview.

7. Woodstock - First loss in a dog's age to AA team shouldn't move you down for a 6 point loss on the road at Regionals. Earlier wins vs other top 10 teams keep you here. Get a pretty easy first round game while RHS vs JMH will be a battle on Friday night. This still on course for a return trip to HS.

8. Fundy - Healthy and finishing the season strong. Battled injuries early but now seem healthy. Now with wins over LHHS, Woodstock and the spread in win over Colonel Gray on their floor looks better after CG results at BMHS this weekend.

9. MVHS - More a case of what have you done for me lately. Could make a big push this weekend and climb up but things have been quiet for a while in the Miramichi.

10. SJHS - Should probably give this spot to CNHS who is actually playing this weekend, but SJHS did get wins over KV, Woodstock, and Fundy this year. As well as tough games with the rest of the top 10 so you can keep it. Though if someone does something to move up into this list this weekend you are the next one out.

Next 5: CNHS, HVHS, RHS, SSHS, SVHS

Well kids, scroll back and see the pre-season picks!! Who was calling for KV to be at the top when the dust cleared??? Moi. I had the advantage of watching Farwell play at national championships this summer...so had th edge on the scouting angle.

FHS youth really evolved this year and they exceeded expectations!!

Fundy and Woodstock in AA. I hope both squads play to their potential. This could be a classic #rockfight to put it in Coach DJR lingo.

See you at Harbour Station.

Pre Harbour Power Rankings

Not much wiggle room left in the year but still some. Again the season long leader gets taken down at sectionals.

1. Kitty - They vs KV could go either way, but the edge right now goes to the Kitty just based on the their control of KV at regionals two weekends ago. Both teams relying on young kids so it should be interesting.

2. KV - KV takes down Sussex and meets a familiar opponent in the Final. Been tough all year but have some odd things happening late (loss to SJHS who doesn't make regionals), big loss to FHS after playing them close and beating them during the season. Which KV do we get.

3. Sussex - Not the ending you were looking for. Team loaded with athleticism and talent, will still be good next year but misses out on back to back appearances at Final 12 by one game. They will come back hungry next season.

4. Riverview - Some questions down the stretch but looked very good vs LHHS in semi. Then got out battled in final vs Kitty. Solid season.

5. BMHS - Another big late season push comes up short in semis vs KV. Tough to see so many pieces leaving but always more young talent to step up.

6. LHHS - Probably higher than people had you early in the year, but got better everytime out. No one got bounced around the list like the lionsHad big tournament wins and played a tough schedule. Losing some players but returning and new blood should have them right back in the hunt again next season.

7. WHS - Back to Harbour Station. 3 Peat on their minds. No real chances left to move up the rankings this year but only graduate a couple so should continue to be a leader in AA and NB hoops culture.

8. FUndy - Team that continues to battle everyone every time out. Have come through injuries earlier in the year tougher and deeper than expected. Have been on a roll down the stretch look to continue that for one more weekend.

9. MVHS - Struggles to score continue to plague them. Tough team that grinds and goes as hard as anyone, just needs to generate consistent offense.

10. SJHS - We'll keep you here. So many confusing things about this season. Hopefully next year's version can keep it between the lines from Novemeber to February.

Well final top 10:

1. KV - Congratulations to the Crusaders who finally get over the top. Even with their top scorers locked up and struggling at times the remaining cast made great shots and made life difficult on the offensive end for FHS. That much length shooting that well is going to be a tough night for anyone and they are deserving champs.

2. Fredericton - Solid all year, out performed expectations. For a coaching staff that has taken heat in the past for underperforming with talent well there's some mud in yer eye. Great season for young Kitty, looked young at times in the final. Should be great battles in the future with returning players on both sides.

3. Sussex - Will look at this season as an opportunity missed but great results all across the board. Still will have talent next year and can play their way. Will be back in the hunt again next year.

4. Riverview - Mixed results down the stretch but a great year for a primarily young group too. Will probably have another summer of all players doing something and right back to the top.

5. BMHS - For a year where they will be accused of underperforming, lets remember they won the last league game vs Riverview big and came within a hoop of the champs on a neutral floor at sectionals. Forumla still seemed solid just didn't get same result as previous year. Interesting look to see how this group rebounds moving forward.

6. LHHS - Didn't end the way they wanted to showed massive growth and competitive spirit all year. Different look next year but some key pieces back and changes in style of play with new personelle might be a posibilty.

7. WHS - 3peat as was planned for though the road was not so smooth as in the previous 2. Lose a couple of big pieces but bring back almost entire roster + additions from JV team that played AAA all year.

8. Fundy - Great finish to season. Big wins down the stretch and tremendous defensive effort in the final. Finish 2016 solidly on the list.

9. MVHS - So much athleticism and talent. Slow start with big soccer run, tried to build some momentum with an early win vs BMHS but just couldn't get to a new level for them.

10. SJHS - Lets be real clear. Less then a month ago they beat KV. They also didn't qualify for regionals. Way too much rollercoaster but clearly one of the top teams in NB this year when they wanted to be.

Next 5: CNHS, HVHS, RHS, SSHS, SVHS

See everybody in 2016-2017
