PostSubject: Re: 2015-2016 Tournaments Thread   Sun Dec 13, 2015 2:14 pm

Previous to this weekend I thought there were 2 or 3 top teams (WGSS, SWC, KSS) in 4A, & a group of 8-10 a few steps below. After this weekend watching KSS destroy Harry Ainley (Top AB team), & Walnut Grove in tough against Semiahmoo, & then lose to Oak Bay - it's really one super dominant team.

Oak Bay, with the 2 volleyball players back, including Emerald MVP Madhu McConnell, & starting C Matthew Griffin are a much different team than at the Kodiak Klassic. The U16 Drive Elite guards Rowell (Grove) & Touchie (OB) match-up was a good one. Ty Rowell is the superior scorer, while Jaden Touchie did a pretty good job defending when head to head. Walnut Grove is massive with Goertzen, Stead, Christenson, Cowley all over 6'7", & Cowley is tough on the block. OB pulled ahead by hitting some 3's in last 5 minutes, including from Gr 10 Calen Scott (U15 Drive Elite). Good game, could've gone either way.

With Churchill losing to Southridge (AA), and Kits losing to Panorama Ridge (by 15), Holy Cross playing much better, & Yale continuing to look strong, it's a race for 2nd. I din't even mention Tamanawis who will be a player, & I'm still holding out for Vancouver College to play better once Rysen starts playing. Terry Fox, Semiahmoo and St George's still in the mix, with Mouat not that far behind.

The next possible chance to see if anyone can beat KSS is the Legal Beagle at Terry Fox Jan 7-9, where KSS is in bottom of draw with Kits & either Moaut or Fox. Walnut Grove is at top of draw with interesting games vs Tamanawis (or VC) and then likely Oak Bay (if they beat West Van). Think I'll check that out.

Given the above it's hard to do a top 10 because most have beaten everyone else (in some way)

My Top 10

1. KSS - they are quite good:)
2. Oak Bay - they lost to Yale & Fox without 2 starters at Kodiak & beat Fox & Walnut Grove with them at Emerald
3. Walnut Grove - still think they are really the 2nd best team. But if they had trouble with OB skill level, what will they do vs KSS
4. SWC - Southridge loss was a blow, but they beat Yale the week before. I also like Srs (Gr 12's), whereas most teams have Gr 10/11's at key positions.
5. Yale - They beat OB, play every team close. Once again under-rated. They could be #2. Also Gr 12 oriented. Led by one of BC's best (Braich)
6. Tamanawis - sleeper team. Haven't played in the big tourneys, so not sure.
7. Terry Fox - always in the mix. Oak Bay only beat them by 7 at the Emerald. Will Laza be back for provincials? Big & tough, teams don't like playing Terry Fox
8. Kits - Big loss to Panorama Ridge. Other than Lizdek (another U16 Drive Elite PG), they are inconsistent (& a bit young).
9. Holy Cross - they are getting better, but still quite young.
10. Semiahmoo - inconsistent with upside.
Sleeper - VC, for obvious reasons

Cool factor - all top 10 teams except Churchill & Yale feature multiple Gr 10/11's in their rotation. Grove & KSS are most obvious, but other top 10 teams as well. Looks good for next few years unless a few kids decide to go south early (don't do it).

SIDE NOTE: Would be interesting to see a Southridge - KSS game. Who will win the recruiting battle for Hunter Hughes

I think after this weekend it is clear there is some very good basketball teams in all tiers. You have to bring your A game every night. If you don't you will be on the losing end. All the top teams in 4A lost this weekend. #1 KSS, #2 SWC, #3 Walnut Grove, #4 Kits. Some loses were worse than others, but its still not a win. Whether you have injuries, players away etc etc you need to find a way to win every step of the way.

My Top Ten:

#1 KSS - very impressive team, they will be tough to beat. If they stay healthy and have some competitive games along the way it will be tough for them to give up #1 all year. But you all remember Kentucky right??

#2 Yale - this team is always underrated. They are the defending 4A champs. They return 10 grade 12's and one of the best Grade 12's in BC Riley Braich. Kid can flat out play and everyone knows there role on the team. This team works hard and will be in every game right till the end.

#3 Oak Bay - this team is very young. Many Grade 11's and 10's playing quality minutes. Yes have been missing some key additions. Oak Bay won the triple A volleyball Championship and had 3 kids missing from Kodiak Tourney 2 were starters. Most are back hence the Emerald City Win. Big upside for this team.

#4 SWC - this team with 5 grade 12 starters is going to be super tough. But this weekend showed they are beatable. Losing to #4 (3A) Southridge was a bit of shock. But this loss will make them stronger. Any one who plays Southridge with Hunter Hughes playing out of his mind could lose.

#5 Walnut Grove - very good team, still not quite there yet. Lots of bigs but Jake Cowley and Ty Rowell are this team. If you slow them down you have a good chance to win.

#6 Tamanawis - who knows with this team, have been absent from all the big tournaments so far. They have been playing in Bellingham area. I am sure they are good. Miguel Tomley will be a handful and only Grade 10, but I feel with the right defence and matchups top teams should win against them.

#7 Terry Fox - tough team as always. They will be in the mix. If your not ready they will beat you. Not a ton of offense but defence and physical play wins games and they have that.

#8 Holy Cross - a young team, still trying to get things together. Very fast. The more they play the better they are getting. A good press but it can be broken and then they get into trouble.

#9 Kits - again Kits starts off highly ranked and fall because of some bad losses. They are young and have some bigs but this team relys heavy on point guard Luka Lidzek. The games I have watched without Luka they would have had more losses.

#10 WJ Mouat - very impressed with this team. They are in most games. They have some good players. Jass Singh can flat out shoot the ball. Don't take Mouat lightly. They come ready to play.

HM - Semiahmoo - wow super impressed with this team. Super young. They are lead by two grade 10's and a grade 11. This team don't take lightly they can play. But have moments where they show they are young.

How good are King George? They flew up the AA rankings from #9 to #3 when they haven't played many of the other teams in the rankings, and the a loss to an unranked AAA team?
