I like Raymond to win it all. They bring back a strong group that went to the Alberta final last year. O'Leary and Ainlay look solid again up in the North. Pearson, McNally and O'Byrne look to have the top returning players in Calgary. Anyone strong outside the traditional powerhouse regions??

Raymond and LCI should be in the south final. Having said that, Magrath and Cardston won't be a slouch either but my money is on Raymond and LCI as the top 2 for boys. For girls, LCI should be the team to beat in the south.

The unknown with magrath this year is how the new coach does

I don't think it's much of an unknown in Magrath. I think most people see it as a significant upgrade and a needed change.

Considering Raymond was the final last year with a core of grade 11s I would expect they would be the team to beat this year provincially. Definitely the best team in the south.

Having not seen anyone play...here would be my list of Edmonton's top 3:

St. FX - Returners and transfers will have this team at the top of the standings
Ross Shep - solid core of returning players
Ainlay - lost some top tier talent but will still be strong

Other newcomers to Tier 1 that should be interesting to watch:
-Lillian Osborne
-Queen E.

Pre-season tournaments and early season matchups should help see where teams are at. Bring it on!

So from what people have seen thus far this weekend, how would people rank the Metro Edmonton boys?

Shep has some good guard play not very strong inside though but better than other edmonton teams in the shep tourment

Cardston just beat Raymond by 21 in Magrath Tourney. perhaps not "definitely" the best....

And Magrath beats Cardston in the Magrath tournament final. South shaping up to be a good battle this year. Should be interesting when LCI and Hat High join the mix.

In boys I see the top 3 teams in the province right now being Cardston as they had a very good showing at the magrath tournament with them beating raymond by 21 for the second time I hear. BOB as they had a good showing at reb finishing 3rd, beating top edmonton teams ross shep, st fx in overtime and almost beating a good kelowna team on the same day.
Mcnally is my other top 3 team , as they have won the Well known district 4 beating bob lci then pearson all in 1 weekend.

raymond and st fx are in the mix aswell

Would you include Magrath in this mix as well? They've had wins against Shep and Cardston now so they should maybe be included in the conversation. They struggle against Raymond losing by 20 or so, but if we are including Raymond after a 20 point loss to Cardston, then Magrath is certainly in the mix. I hear that LCI had a weaker showing at REB. Can anyone else comment on that?

Ya lci had 2 losses agaisnt a not very strong ontario team and jasper place over the weekend. Lci also losing to mcnally and churchill in calgary, but all close games so lci seems to be very inconsistent at the moment. Magrath didn't know they beat ross shep, they seem to be having a good start as well . @Ball456

Could be one of the more competitive seasons in a long while. Seems there are several good teams province wide santa

PostSubject: Magrath    Mon Dec 19, 2016 2:07 pm

The Magrath game against Raymond was a 4 point game with like 4 minutes to go when Taylor Cook fouled out and Sam Payne was so sick he could barely play so I would expect a closer game in the sugar bowl if they play each other in the semi final.

Mens Ball:I thought Raymond would be the class of the South, as they return their entire roster from last years second place finish at provincials, but I have been impressed with Magrath and Cardston so far this year. LCI has had an OK start, but not great. In Edmonton, Ainlays roster has been bolstered by a grade 11 Queen E transfer and this fills a glaring need they had at the point guard spot after 3 year player Marvin Washington graduated last year. Ainlays projected #5 man moved to Kelowna and this leaves them very small, but Ainlay can run, defend, and shoot the 3 with any team in Edmonton.  O Learys 6 foot 8 big man (Adong) has moved to Ontario and his departure , along with the another one of their projected starters, means O Leary will be good, but not the powerhouse they would have been otherwise. Shep will be good as they probably have the best grade 11 PG in province (Keyon Moore) and an assortment of athletic defenders that can also score. . FX is loaded with grade 12s and they added JP transfer Geoffrey James (provincial player). A dark horse to watch out for is Lillian Osborne, who moved up to div 1 this year and will surprise a few teams as they have provincial talent-- not sure if they can crack the top 4 in Edmonton, but they might make a run at it. In Calgary,  I think BOB is the class of the South division. In Calgary North, I think there are several teams that could represent Calgary at provincials: tandem of Moses and Kamba at Bishop McNalley could take them far, and LBP is capable of winning Calgary championships.  I think there are 3 or 4 very solid teams in  each of the South, Edmonton, and Calgary zones that should make this an interesting year.
