Predictions
AAA girls : Right now I would put Riverview number one . They have lost a couple good players but with Picard and Donhaue returning they will be tuff . #2 Woodstock , with three girls on the u17 nb team and one on the u16 team they can field a very talented first unit but are lacking size . Leo Hayes and FHS should round out the top four . With so many to pick from they always seem to be able to compete .

AA Girls : With Hartland graduating there top three , Devon Park folding , Southern Victoria rebuilding with youth and RNS returning with basically the same team . The earlly nod would have to go with Tobique Valley . Tobique is returning 9 of there 10 players and most teams will have trouble trying to guard both big girls . Top four : Tobique , RNS , Caladonia and Southern Victoria .

This is if they keep the same format for AAA and AA . If they do two tier it then just mail Woodstock and Tobique there banners .

interesting points....does anyone what the timeline might be for a decision on the 4 tier play-off proposal ?
What are the details of that....at play-offs each of the two divisions sub-divide to 4?? Based on population? What is the cut off ...AAA -over 750 kids -tier1 , under 750 -tier 2? AA -over 250 -tier1 , under 250 - tier 2?? anyone know the details of the proposal?
Interestingly enough under the above scenario Sugarloaf would be tier 1 at play-offs and DRHS (who will be below 250 kids next year) would be tier 2.

Isn't Caledonia losing their top player. As a casual observer of the NE I think Petty could surprise some.

One should not forget Harvey as I believe they have all returning and Stanley always finds a way to compete. With Neil Smith taking over Dalhousie they will be scary defensively btu I agree the year starts with TVHS in a position to take it all with RNS causing some concern. RNS has 2 players playing BNB summer ball

Dal may be good on defence, but from what I saw in limited action last year what about scoring? Is it confirmed Neil will be there.

Grand Manan should be a force this year with Jess Brown returning to the island, and having Kim Wilson, and Whitney Clinch.. Watch out for Grand Manan this year , im predicting they will be going to harbour station vs Tobique.. Veysey can turn them into something great

AAA Girls

Riverview to win it all again with LHHS, FHS, and WHS fighting it out to see who gets to play them in the final.

AA Girls

TVHS needs to prove they can do it again but should be the favorite. GM, RNS, SVHS all with a shot to be right there with them.

Tobique will be there for sure but look out for RNS they will add girls from their JV program to make them stronger and deeper. Brown could leave GMCS at the drop of a hat and SVHS will be young.

Grand Manan has picked up some girls from their JV team.. and Wilson and Brown returning.. Veysey will find a way for them to make it , if they try hard.

The season is just around the corner, anything new or is it still Tobique Valley vs someone else from the SW?

Could be GM, RNS, OR SV......I think all 3 of these teams will be chasing Goodine and her pack

Based on what I witnessed last season I am not willing to predict TV in Saint John yet. Speed kills and the TV team will need to get some fitness or the strong teams from last year (obviously not DP) will run them up and down until they are out of gas. Lets give the coaches some credit here for being prepared.

Based on what I seen last year TV got in trouble with fouls not speed . The reason they beat DP on the big floor was there fast break and you cannot run a fast break without speed . DP had a hard time to keep up with TV's speed and only started to get back in the game when Ouellette and Glass got in foul trouble . I agree though there are some good young talented teams out there but if TV stays out of foul trouble they are the team to beat . GM , SV and RNS all have good young teams but they are the same teams that TV beat last year by 25 plus . And remember TV has nine of there ten back and all five starters . Just my opinion but I am right ....lol

I don't think that Tobique even played GM last year?

RNS beat Tobique once last year at top of the hill tourney. No one seems to be considering Harvey?

No, the refs beat RNS last year at that tourney. I believe that even the RNS coach apologized for the reffing. TV beat GM at least 2 times last year by 20+ each time. Speed is not a problem for TV....find a way to stop Goodine is a problem for all other teams.

AA ffan is mostly correct except for 1 point. SV has a younger team this year but a better one as well....not the same team as last year.

Harvey doesn't have the guns to play with the top 4 teams mentioned.

To be fair:

-Tobique Valley is not a better basketball team, better coached, or more skilled then most of the top teams in AA.

- Tobique Valley does have two players who have been team NB post players who dominante the boards at both ends. Regardless of what they do defensively when those two are in the game you if you miss the first shot it is the only one they get. The majority of their offense 5 on 5 does not come from made shots out of action, rather put backs on the offensive glass.

Wanting to beat Tobique is as simple as getting one or both these girls in foul trouble and being able to get the rebounding margin at both ends even. The games where TV struggled last year, where when people got those girls in foul trouble, teams had athletes that could compete on the boards or teams who could make shots and not need putbacks or layups on offense.

Oh and in the real girls final I'm calling Riveriew vs. FHS.

Stating that TV only wins because of there two bigs also can be stated about most teams . Would you still pick Riverview if Picard and Donahue were not there or FHS without Appleby or Haslet ?? Probably not .
I was chatting recently with the TV coach and they may be in trouble with numbers . In order to run there JV program they are unable to move any girls up . Therefore they are playing this year with nine and one of the nine plays AAA girls hockey out of Fredericton and that is her top priority . It will be tuff in tourney play with only eight players most of the time . With that few of players I think that everything may of evened up a bit over all . Anyone with a deep bench could wear down this team . If they can stay close early SV , GM , RNS and Harvey could definatly have a good shot at beating them .

Exactly right AA.....a big inside game wins championships!

I think TV will start off very strong and things may even out a bit later on. Veysey and the Brain might just be able to strategize a plan to get close but TV is the team to beat until proven otherwise!!

I'm not trying to start a controversy (well maybe a little so more people will talk about girls basketball in this province . . . after all we've had a NEDA player or national team player for something like 5 years in a row now) but I'm not sure we are talking apples and apples.

First of all TV's bigs are "bigs" they aren't beating people through superior play rather being bigger and more active which for them and that team is only effective at best vs. decent high school level. Against equal athleticism or even a superior skilled team that worked hard they wouldn't be nearly as effective.

Appleby is the only other girl you mentioned who uses athleticism as a primary weapon over skill and she is arguably still more skilled then the two kids from TV. The others are great players beating people on skills developed through years of training and basketball IQ. I would argue that FHS and Riverview (along with LHHS and WHS) will beat teams this year because of their depth of talent compared to everyone else. I think if you take the best two players off each of these teams their team still beats 85% of the girls teams in the province. If you take those two kids off TV what percentage of the teams in the province do they beat????

I'm not anti TV or anti AA basketball. I think Hilary and the Oulette girls work hard and do a great job. I just wouldn't but them in the same category as the best basketball players this province in producing. In the same way as on Sundays when here are a dozen football games to watch, there is always the "real" game between the top teams that garners the most attention. It doesn't make the rest of the teams robots or not respected, it just that everyone watching knows where the best talent to watch will be.
