Well folks, looks like that time of year is quickly approaching us once again, all-star time! I know we're all (or at least I am) chomping at the bit to see some of the best high school basketball talent New Brunswick has to offer, come together for two exciting games! But the big question is, who will we be seeing on the Sussex court this year? After a tumultuous season, some underdog comebacks, and of course a few unexpected upsets, who is everyone expecting to see make the all-star team this year? Girls, boys, AA, AAA, who are your picks?

I'm not a fan of the voting format, so no public choices by me. I wish I was a wise enough man to come up with a system to choose the actual best players(which is also a subjective term), instead of the current system which actually rewards the players based on coaches votes of a player they may have only seen play twice that year.

Last year I noticed that Pat Macnaughton from sugarloaf was an all-star well deserved however this year i feel that it should be pat again but atleast one or if so 2 more from sugarloaf instead of the weak players from those other aa teams who don't deserve it. A couple of ideas could be that number 6 guy i think his name is eric johnson correct me if im wrong but he seems like a pretty good 3 point shooter and can slash at times. Also they have a kid by the name of duan who played u-16 last summer very good guard has great passing ability and maybe a long shot for him but he seems like a guy who could make the team also. Joe maxwell and myles bernard from dalhousie also should get some recognition.

Top 5 players in the North

Pat MacNaughton
Eric Johnson
Jared Paterson
Ryan Hunter
Myles Bernard

This would be a nice starting 5,

Macnaughton over Moffit (Both good, Macnaughton all around better)
Myles over Robinson (Myles is stronger and box's out, making Robinsons game really difficult)
Peterson over Wood
Johnson over Harrington (Offensively Johnson, Defensively Harrington)
Hunter = Bishop ( arguably the best shooter in AA, Bishop does damage in the post, this one could go either way)

So comparing these players, im pretty sure it would do more than just contend with the south.

myles bernard is definitly not over robinson. harvey played dalhousie and robinson easyily out played him. also its kind of dumb to compare a post to a guard.

If Im right I believe teh All Star format goes 7 players from the North East and 7 from the South West in both AA and AAA. 14 players on a team with the NE playing the SW. My picks from what I've seen and heard this year are like this:

NE-AA

1. Pat Macnaughton(SSHS)
2. Joe Maxwell(Dal)
3. Jared Peterson (CNBA)
4. Oliver Hall(Bellisle)
5. Eric Lewis(JMA)
6. Duan Fournier Ash(SSHS)
7. Justin Corey(Minto)

AAA-

1.Brad States(Bathurst)
2. Matt Daley(Bathurst)
3. Jesse Balser(RHS)
4. Caleb Dow(BMHS)
5. Chris Murray(RHS)
6. Nash Zangio( Odysse)
7. Steve Ethelson (RHS)

SW - AA

1. Brandon Moffit - (Macadam)
2. Gordon Robinson( Harvey)
3. Brandon Meikle( DP)
4. Tyler Howlett( Campo)
5. Matt Harrington( DP)
6. Thomas Murphy - (Harvey)
7. Probably someone from the west not familiar with the rest of the west though.

AAA-

1. Josh Lafleur - (LHHS)
2. Peter Esson(FHS)
3. Adam Spurrell (KVHS)
4. Liam Shea( Rothesay)
5.Richie Wilkins( LHHS)
6. Jon Ryer (OHS)
7. Jarred Crawford (KVHS)

What do ya think?

Which one of these two plays post? Myles is always inside, and if robinson doesnt thats just stupid, the kid is like 6'5 and can jump. I still think that myles is better, myles comes out every game ready to play, robinson only seems to show up when he wants to.

not sure he might have had a bad game againts harvey but he is underrated i don't see many guys stopping him when he plays inside or outside because he can hit the three if need be he is not flashy that is why he is not noticed. He also gets tons of boards to.

This would be a nice starting 5,
I think Duan Fournier-ASh can replace Jared Paterson because of the siz of myles and eric already being a 5 and 4 players. With pat being the small forward and Ryan being the shooting guard so whats left is a Point guard and duan fills that spot in my opinion

is it me or does Mark Jaxxson seem to like Duan Fournier a little too much? seems like everytime mark jaxxson puts up a new post Fournier is the topic of discussion. I personally never seen or heard of him before. Is he even all-star material?

He played U16 last summer. Very good PG. Great attitude and commitment. Gets overlooked at the PG spot being on the same team as Pat McNaughton. Wouldn't pick him for the all-star team though.

Also from the west I would mention #16 from SV. Not sure of her name or how consistent she was but the few games I saw she stood out.

It's not that i like him very very very much there bud haha i just found that this starting line-up was already good enoguh with bigs myles and eric and since they have 2-3 guards what their missing is a point guard. Now since were choosing players from the north i couldn't think of any other aa point guards unless u had someone else in mind which is why i chose that fournier kid

A couple of notes:

- Duan is a great young player. With sugarloaf being so guard heavy he may not stand out, but would be well deserving of an all-star at this level.

- The allstars are not nominated by position. Each school nominates 5 players from other schools in their own conference. Depending on which pick they are 1,2,3 etc they get a certain number of points etc. Lists of top point getters in each conference are assembled by conference presidents who meet with their counter part (NE/SW) and select a top 7 for each.
This process could give you 7 guards or 7 bigs. The real issue tends to be that teams/schools that only see these teams in league games and may not follow them or a province as a whole get as much say as a knowledgable school/coach. So teams can be making selections simply based on how they played against them, or how they feel about a certain player, etc.
