PostSubject: Jaguar Classic   Wed Dec 16, 2009 3:37 pm

Below are the pools for the Jaguar Classic (Jan 6-9). The schedule will follow in the next couple of days. With 52 teams, there is sure to be some great basketball. The way the tournament works is that the winner from each pool will advance to the playoff round. Thus there will be 13 teams advancing. These 13 teams will be seeded 1-13 and the top three seeds will get a bye to the quarter finals and play the lowest three seeds that advance past the preliminary playoff round. In my opinion, the pools that should offer the best games for the round robins are pools G, I, L, C, and B.

Pool A - SJH (Host), North Park, Arnprior, Woodroffe
Pool B - Notre Dame, Regi-Notre Dame, St. Michael, SRB
Pool C - Franco Ouest, Donald A Wilson, Colonel By, St. Pius
Pool D - St. Teresa of Lisieux, Ridgemont, Opeongo, Earl of March
Pool E - Brookfield, Bishop Carter, Lester B Pearson, Earnestown
Pool F - Chippewa, Ashbury, South Carleton, Cornwall
Pool G - All Saints, St. Joseph (Cornwall), St. Patrick, De La Salle
Pool H - Mother Teresa, Brockville, Deslaurier, St. Matthew
Pool I - Immaculata, AY Jackson, Bayridge, Bell
Pool J - St. Laurent, Fellows, Rideau, Hillcrest
Pool K - Ottawa Islamic, Belle River, Carleton Place, Nepean
Pool L - St. Paul, Aurora, Smiths Falls, Glebe
Pool M - Banting Memorial, Sir Wilfred Laurier, Louis Riel, St. Mark

Here is what little I know about the out of town teams:

St. Theresa Lisieux are an above average team from York that could contend for this tournament title this year.

St. Joes Cornwall - always seem to be the best team from Cornwall. They have some size and can shoot. I heard that they beat Perth this season as well and Perth has done well in tournament play this season.

Regi-Notre Dame - usually a decent program from Kingston. I know their junior team is decent but i have not heard anything about their senior team.

Bayridge from Kingston - they are a solid team that plays hard. They can shoot and will play intense.

A few questions:

North Park: Brampton or Brantford?
Notre Dame: Ottawa?
St. Michael: Kemptville?
All Saints: Kanata or Whitby?

I notice that the earlier post that you pulled had fewer teams. Was a decision made to add more teams?

Not sure about North Park but I will ask the convenor of the tournament. Notre Dame is Ottawa, St. Michael is Kemptville, and All Saints is Kanata.

I am not sure what post you are referring to, but if it was the one I made earlier in the day, it should have been the same number of teams but it was all crammed together as it did not format properly.

That's the one. I thought I counter fewer than the 52 teams listed here but it might have been the formatting that threw me off.

It looks like North Park from Brampton has league games on the 6th and 7th. I can't see them playing all of their round robin games in time for the playoffs if they don't start play until the afternoon of the 8th.

I don't understand how a tournament of this size can fairly include out of town teams. Up to seven games is one thing when we're talking local teams over four days but I assume teams from Toronto aren't planning to stay up to 3 or 4 nights to compete.

Even if teams play three playoff games on Saturday (something I never liked as a player or coach), this would still mean some teams are also playing three games on Friday and one on Thursday night. That's too many games in such a short time.

Ideally, this tournament will one day decide that they should go a tiered route like the St. Mats girls tournament. That way they can continue to include as many teams as possible without creating a monster of a scheduling nightmare.

Also, St. Theresa cannot be considered one of the stronger teams in this tournament unless Ottawa basketball is very weak this year, which I don't think is true. While they have a coach who loves to boost the program over on Hooptown, the fact is that they are rebuilding. They went 0-3 at a mid-level tournament this past week and they aren't even one of the top two or three teams in the weakest league in the GTA.

St. Joe's from Cornwall is another team that isn't as strong as the past couple of years. Their key players from last year are mostly gone.

The best teams in this tournament will be the local ones: Borden, Bye, Pearson, Ashbury, St. Pat's, St. Mat's, Immaculata, Hillcrest, and Nepean.

I received a message that it is the Brantford team coming. If so, they should be a contender. Here is what I wrote in response to a request about info:

They should be decent. They made the CWOSSA AAA final in junior the past two years, winning it last year. They have been one of the top 3 or 4 boys programs in CWOSSA the past few years. Last year the senior team made the final four of CWOSSA AAA with a number of grade 11s starting.

Should be an excellent tournament, the top 13 will most likely be
A.SJ (Alex Labranche, Lane M.)
B.SRB (Nikola M., Amir Majidi, Jamal Aden)
C.CB (Mehdi Tihani, Omar Mohamed)
D.EOM (Ryan Evans, Owen Powers)
E.LBP (Johnny Berhane, Achuil Lual, Darren Pagal)
F.Ashbury (Jean Pierre)
G.St.Pats (Christian Kondo, Marial Shayok, Deamar Thomas)
H.St.Matts (Gavin Resch, Matt Price)
I.Bell (Josh Shiposh, Sham Mohamud)
J.Hillcrest (Isaac E.)
K.Nepean (Justin Shaver)
L.Glebe (Peyton)..and for St.Pauls (Craigh Poleso)-St.Pauls could fight for that
M.Louis Riel- Havent seen them play, but they usually have a good team

Top 3 teams will probably be SRB, LBP and Nepean since they are much stronger then the rest of the teams in there pools, since all 13 teams could potentially go 3-0 how will the rankings work? is it going to be points for and against? or just a defensive stand point and is points against just going to be looked at?

Coach C... if it's the same St. Theresa team that I saw last year, they were VERY well coached (well diciplined), had some quick athletic guards, and a bit of size down low. They also ran the floor very well.

The schedule was suppose to come out last week, but a couple of teams dropped out but have been replaced but the schedule still needs to be re-worked. It should be out next week likely with this being the holidays and all.

Meh, I saw them last year when I was in Toronto scouting and they were ok at best. This year they are definitely weaker. They will not contend for the championship.

IMO, North Park is the only real contender from out of town.

Chippewa beat SRB 72-70 to win the tournament final. It was a great game with two very evenly matched teams. Another excellent finish to the Classic!
