Copy of teams and initial draw for tournament - 2 Ottawa teams in HT and SH, few Gatineau CEGEP's and some good representation from GTA and around province. Should be good basketball, too bad it's up against Jaguar same week-end:

Friday January 8/10

11:00 am Game 1 Holy Trinity - Applewood (Mississauga) Gym 1
Game 2 St. Augustine (Markham) - Nicolas Gatineau Gym 2

12:30 pm Game 3 Sacred Heart - Outaouais Gym 1
Game 4 Metro Prep (GTA) - D & M Thompson (Scarborough) Gym 2

2:00 pm Game 5 Jeanne Mance – G.W.Williams Gym 1
Game 6 de L’Ille - D’Youville (Brampton) Gym 2

3:30 pm Game 7 Notre Dame (Burlington) – W of Game 1 Gym 1
Game 8 Notre Dame (Sudbury) - W of Game 2 Gym 2

It really is too bad that this tournament is running the same weekend as the St. Joes tournament. Having some of the other top teams from Ottawa in this tournament would really generate more interest for it as there are some solid out of town teams participating this year. All of the top Ottawa teams are in the St. Joes tournament (other than Sacred Heart).

I know that Metro Prep has had some good games against some of the top teams in the GTA so they should be one of the favourites to win. Another favourite has to be d'Youville. They have been one of the top teams in their board for the last few years. Applewood and Sacred Heart will also be contenders for the title of this tournament. I am unfamiliar with the CGEP schools but these will be the top four teams that I am familiar with. IF Sacred Heart could win this tournament, that will be quite an accomplishment.

Interestingly enough, this tournament will feature two of the top grade 9s in the country: Kevin Zabo (de l'Ile) and Jordan Robinson (David & Mary Thomson). A couple of top grade 10 prospects as well in Xavier Rathan-Mayes (David & Mary Thomson) and Matthew Atewe (Metro Prep).

d'Youville and Sacred Heart appear to be the top teams. Metro Prep is young, but performed admirably at the Rimrocker this week (1-2, with close losses to Brampton Notre Dame and Welland Notre Dame). Applewood is a Tier 2 team in Peel Region. I don't expect them to challenge for the title.

Nicolas-Gatineau, de l'Ile (Gatineau), and Jeanne Mance (Montreal) are high schools (i.e. grades 9-11). Outaouais is the only CEGEP involved and, considering they defeated AAA CEGEP teams Ahuntsic and Edouard Montpetit earlier this year, they will be a tough competitor as well.

I will second Barry's comments: D'Youville and Metro Prep are the two out of town teams that will have the best chance of winning the title, with D'Youville's chances ahead of a younger Metro Prep team. The Panthers were second at SOSI and consolation champs at our tournament though their only loss was to the eventual champions from J. Clarke Richardson in their first round robin game. They are one of the top teams in what is almost certainly the deepest league in the province. The other GTA teams are either rebuilding or playing tier 2.

Why the organizers put Sacred heart against Outaouais in the first round is beyond me, unless it is OFSAA style where you can lose your first and still make the final.

D'Youville is the team to beat with Sacred, Outaouais, and Metro Prep the next best teams.

The draw is interesting, it's not an OFSAA style so Sacred Heart is in tough and has a very challenging draw. Outaouais in the first game, probably Metro Prep in the 2nd as they play winner of game 4, may have their easiest game in the semi's (if they get there) and then D'Youville in the finals if the favourites take shape.

The organizers definitely didn't do them any favours or even look at any possible seedings but guess you have to beat everyone anyways! If SH wins this nobody can argue a soft route along the way.

Anyone know who won? I heard that GW and d'Youville were in the finals. How did Sacred Heart do in their games?

Disciplined approach pays off for school
By Wayne Kondro, The Ottawa Citizen

January 11, 2010

Even a modicum of discipline can make all the difference on the basketball court. And the lack of it invariably leads to panic and greater disarray.

Ample evidence for those propositions was provided in Sunday's final of the Clint Dunning University of Ottawa high school tournament at Montpetit Hall.

Brampton's Marguerite D'Youville Panthers had a measure of discipline, while Aurora's Dr. G.W. Williams Wildcats had virtually none and the outcome between the Ontario schools was a predictable 75-26 mauling.

The Panthers had built a 25-6 lead with excellent box-outs on the defensive boards, crisp ball movement and a bit of patience on offence.

The Wildcats promptly lost their wits and began forcing shots or steadfastly refusing to pass the ball to open teammates. D'Youville quickly punished them for their lack of discipline, exploding for 19 unanswered points before Panthers coach Carlo Zoffranieri rolled out his bench players for mop-up duties.

"We played our best basketball," said tournament MVP Manny Sahota, who's bound for Cornell University. "We moved the ball around. That's what coach preaches. We wanted to move it around, find the open player, be unselfish and that's what we did."

Zoffranieri said his Panthers are formidable when they stick to the game plan. "That's the only way we're going to get back to the provincials. We moved the ball. We made our shots."

Wildcats coach Charles Hantoumakas said fatigue undid his troops. "This was our sixth game in six days and we came out looking pretty flat. Our transition defence was lacking. Our transition offence was lacking. And fatigue really hurt us with our jump shots."

Chris Oppong and Shane Thomas-Campbell each scored 12 points to pace the Panthers. Dylan Periana added 10. Vance Fong led the Wildcats with seven.

In the bronze medal match, Scarborough's David & Mary Thomson nipped Sudbury Notre Dame 52-50 as Jason Helwig scored 15 points and Jordan Robinson 14. Eric Lavergne-Giroux led Notre Dame with 12. Yves Piette added 16.

The consolation final saw the Sacred Heart Huskies dump Burlington Notre Dame 44-33 as Vikas Gill scored 11.

Joining Sahota, Periana, Robinson and Lavergne-Giroux on the all-tournament team were Aurora's Jude Gouveia and Sacred Heart's Sean Stoqua.
