First game of the day

In the game of the day it was a nail bitter the whole way through both teams went back and forth and battled hard burnett down 2 had a chance to tie but came up short and 2 free throws from south sealed the victory

Semi finals tomorrow

Congrats to South and McMath.

I think the best b-ball in the province , over and above Provincials, will happen at FV championships this weekend. Four of the top six teams are battling for 3 spots. Pitt, Tweeds, wrca and Mouat. Predict that the 3 teams that make it out of the Valley will be playing in the Provincial semi-finals next weekend.

I think that Churchill or VC/Kits could beat any of those teams.

I think what bball guy is trying to say is the way the berths are distributed is unfair to some teams. Especially in the valley and in vancouver. Think of it this way in the previous rankings Kits was #2 and VC was # 5 and for some reason only one of them can go to victoria. And in the valley Pitt #3, wrca #4, wj mouat #6 and tweedsmuir #10, just to name a few of the best valley teams, and only three of them get to go. While on the island they get 3 berths plus the host so in total they get 4 berths with the highest ranked team on the island is #8, to me thats absured! Teams like Lv rogers and Skeena get in without proving anything and I think we all know that all the teams listed above would beat either of them handly. Why do the V n Ds get two berths and vancouver gets 1.5 and vancouver has three teams that could win v and ds. All in all I think that the berths should be redone every year based on which regions have the most talented teams, so that in the provincial tournament we always have the best teams competing, teams that are in weak regions like Lv rogers, skeena, dover bay, and ballenas prove that they deserve to be in the provincials by beating VC/Kits and Pitt/tweedsmuir, or even Saints or burnett.

All I am trying to say is give credit where credit is due.

Coach Fabio, the world does not revolve around the LOWER MAINLAND, your attitude that the rest of the province should prove themselves against LOWER MAINLAND teams is somewhat arrogant and ignorant.

there is a world beyond the LOWER MAINLAND.

its called the provincials for a reason, not the LOWER MAINLANDS

PostSubject: A Fairer System   Sat Feb 26, 2011 10:34 am

Every team in the province should have the opportunity to compete for the provincial championship, regardless of where they are from. The NCAA has a reasonably fair system, which allows for automatic berths for winning a conference, which is equivalent to becoming the champion of a region of the province. It is important to continue to have representation from all parts of the province.

The problem with the system seems to be that there are not enough wildcard positions which allow the selection committee to choose those team that deserve to be in the tournament based on the strength of their schedule and their win-loss record. For example, if Duke comes second in their conference (because, say, they do not beat North Carolina), they are not expected to play 3 or 4 games to "play-in" or be excluded altogether. There should be sufficient number of spaces available so that kids get to play in the provincials if they have earned the right to be there through their playing record (and ranking), not solely on where they happen to live or go to school.

Right now the system is biased against strong regions and independent schools.

Sunnyok, I wasn't only saying that it was just the lower mainland that gets ripped off I was saying that the fraser valley get ripped off aswell teams like walnut grive, fraser heights, delta, and pitt/tweedsmuir will not be at provincials, I just think that the way the berths were distributed was unfair to deserving teams in the lower mainland aswell as the FRASER VALLEY.

This is a portion of Howard Tsumura's article

When it comes to B.C. hoop berths, nothing tougher than junior boys' on the old Valley road
By Howard Tsumura Wed, Feb 23 2011 COMMENTS(1) Howie's High School Hamper

THE OLD VALLEY ROAD HAS NEVER BEEN TOUGHER

Adds veteran Pitt Meadows senior boys head coach Rich Goulet of the Fraser Valley: "It's easier for a senior team to make the B.C.'s than a junior team."

Points well taken.

Despite having a membership of some 66 non-tiered schools, the Fraser Valley receives just three berths to the B.C. Junior Championships, this season set to run March 4-6 in Victoria at St. Michaels University School. By contrast, the Fraser Valley's 48 senior Triple A teams receive eight berths to its B.C. championships, a ratio nearly four times greater.

In fact, the teams that have survived the two sudden-death rounds of regional play which began at eight satellite sites on Monday, games which served to slice the field from 32 teams to eight, are among the very best in the province.

"The Fraser Valley had five teams in the last Top 10 rankings, and only three of them are going to get to go to provincials," says Jon Fast, head coach of Langley's Walnut Grove Gators, whose own team along with Pitt Meadows, White Rock Christian Academy, W.J. Mouat of Abbotsford and Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey are among the province's elite. "It's a dogfight just to get out of the Fraser Valleys."
